The forums always remind that most of us on here are 'men.' lol, so many of us taking the initiative to promulgate "what great drivers we are " or "don't drive unless you now how to push the limits..." etc. It's hilarious. whip em' out boys! c'mon....

In order to converge us merrily back to the subject 'AWD,' I'd just like to state:

I owned both a 2002 AND a 2006.... The 2002 was MUCH better in snowy weather. PERIOD. Divulge ANY technical aspect, I DO NOT CARE. I have driven both cars in auto cross and on snowy icy roads..... 2002 never made my pulse race in slick conditions, it always recovered very quickly with me doing very little. Could be ECU, lack of Viscous Coupling, could be voodoo magic dragons eating peanut-butter under the transfer case next to the Kunooter-valve, flux-capacitor and the muffler-bearings..... The AWD on the 2004+ X-Types feel MUCH more like a RWD vehicle. Even with my snow tires on. MAYBE I am a HORRIBLE driver... does not hurt my ego.

I love you all Please continue the 'AWD' discussion

Scotch? Although a terrific choice, why no martini?

the 2002 awd system was amazing, I used to fly by everyone in that car when it was snowing.
My 2006 feels like I'm driving my RWD SC430 in the snow

My 2004 is flawless in the snow with allseason tires. I never ever had an issue and in noreasters and blizzards it cuts through the snow better then most 4wd trucks/cars/etc.

Do you still run summer tires on your 06? That would be the only reason it is not good in the snow.

a couple of weeks ago we got a foot or so of snow, and of course was below freezing. I had already swapped over from the summer performance tires on 18s to the always fashionable 16" pure snow tires on the black steel rims. Goes nice with the tinted glass, kind of ghetto chic. In any case the car was absolutely flawless in the snow, and if it weren't for the other a-holes with summer tires clogging up the streets and getting stuck on 10 degree hills I likely would have had a normal commute. As it was though my 60 minute commute took 1.5 hours to go 1/4 of the way. I then turned around and worked remotely for the balance of the day.

my 2006 WAS being driven with All-season tires... just put the snow tires on. MUCH better. Still nothing like my 2002 was... I suspect that my all-season tires just are a low-quality compound. They Hankook, and they feel pretty stiff when it gets cold. I suspect they are hardening similar to a summer compound, and I will likely not ever purchase a Hankook tire again.

Mr Bond, I've been watching your driving in those last two movies where you treat that beautiful AMDBS like a cheap bitch in dry asphalt. Therefore I don't even dare to imagine how is your driving in the icy road when snow on it , I also wonder if you are driving under martinis most of the time when you are on duty of her Majesty...

LOL, you are my new Jaguar-forums 'best-friend'
I do tend to drive like an arsehole most of the time.... Humility does serve me well to admit this. lol
For all of you couch-racers out there, enjoy knowing my prior 2002 X-Type won several auto-cross 1st place trophies. With the right setup, it is sooooo incredibly 'balanced.' KW coilover kit is a big part of that equation along with custom-built strut bars and weight reductions.

Default Great to have friend from Iowa!

I suppose we all can share some of that glory of yours as a Jaguar owners, but I wonder how you can compete in class D with those vw R32's those are slippery little suckers.
Because I'm one of those flesh eating dudes from cold climate, we share many other things that Jaguars, maybe Bruce Springsteens songs are one of those also...

Which Hankooks? Ventus Evo's? I got caught in a snowstorm last year before I had my winter wheels on, I still had the Evo's on the summer rims. It was a little spooky in the snow for sure.

The early AWD versions from most accounts seemed to be better in the snow. My 02 was a mountain goat with Hankook Icebear W300's. When I had a 2007 loaner for a few weeks in the snow with the OEM all-seasons it was like night and day compared to my 02. I got used to it but the 02 was superior in this regard. Of course the 07 had 2 cupholders so it's a wash...

just for giggles I took the car out last winter when we had a few inches on the roads and had the summer tires on. ZR rated directional performance tire.....needless to say I was spinning on a 5 degree incline. AWD is fine but with crappy tires it just means more tires spin. The traction control was going mental!

Living up here in Northern New York we also get alot of snow. My wife drives our X Type and I drive the Rover. Both do great in the snow, but as others have said snow tires are important. I find the traction control in the Jag useful in the snow.

Does anyone know what they did on the models W/O the viscous coupling? I have the technical description of the VC type transfer case that is posted here... Service Document Link But what is the difference in the newer models? Did they use some form of differential?

Thanks.
