Question Alternator lifespan

How many kilometers can I expect to get out of my stock alternator before the brushed need replacing? What Ks have you got out of your X type alternators?

Alternators seem to be very reliable in the X-Type. You don't hear a lot about people needing to change them. How long they would last is very hard to say depending on how the car is used, the climate it lives in, how well general maintenance is kept up, etc. It is more likely you would need to replace the battery cables than the alternator. If you do a search on here about that you will get a better understanding of that.

Mine had almost 165,000 miles on it without any issues. Never had any issues with the cables either. I was really fortunate.

My experience;

200,000 miles on a 2003, sold it but still going strong.
160,000 miles on a 2005, car got totaled.
90,000 miles on a 2007, and still going strong.

Never replaced an alternator.

I did replace the alternator in my previous 04. That was at 80k miles. But in hindsight that was probably the battery cables. The new alternator was a O’Reillys part and never worked well. I eventually had to dish out money for a OEM

I replaced mine at 115k. Ton of oil on it but before I had the engine replaced. Could have played a part in premature failure.
