Default Another newbie question...

So I'm almost through my first tank of gas and the manual calls for the ultra, super-duper, high quality, extra .50/gallon stuff. Is that pretty much what everybody runs, or can I get away with aregular or mid grade gasoline? If its going to hurt the car I have no problem paying the extra, but just wondering if it is absolutely necessary.

If you want the best gas milage and performance, you need to use that fuel (92 or better)
If you don't care about any of that and want to stick to the cheap stuff cause "there is no differance" fuel is fuel right?

Honestly, I've heard/read thathigher octane only serves to keep the engine from knocking. If you run the lower octane and the engine doesn't knock then you're only wasting your money on the higher octane stuff. Again, that's just what I've read and the reason for my question.

They don't even offer 92 here in Colorado. With the higher altitude you can get away with a little lower octane rating without causing any trouble.

Welcome skyjack!
Yeah you should have specified that and your anwer would have been different! Racer is sort of a God around here for info so as long as you give him all of your information he'll be able to answer almost everything if not everything!

Here in Michigan I figured out the total cost of buying the highest octane (other than the turbo blue 110) and the cost is actually only 3 dollars for every fill-up which to me only filling up once a week or 2 weeks the 3 dollars isn't a bad price to me... Some people have put regular unleaded in and thought they were getting better mileage but it will only last so long...once all the gunk and what not builds up only negatives will result! In higher elevations such as your situation things may be quite different than us in lower elevations. The other problem is also in the computer...the car adjusts to the fuel that you are putting in and to me the 3 bucks is by far worth the 3-6k on a new engine!

Yes, I know what the sticker says...just thought I'd see if anyone had any experience to contrary. If not, then that's cool and thanks for the help. "Hackers" tend to have more real world experience with the vehicle than the engineers so that's why I asked the question. BTW, those same engineer types put that sticker on Mercedes and I've seen those run 200k miles on the regular stuff with no problems...

if lower grade fuel is used, it will have misfire, vehicle will hesitate,
it makes a difference on high end vehicles.

As covered here before......I run mine on 95 ron unleaded and she runs just fine..........I've had a few tanks of the 99 ron Superunleaded and she deffo runs much much smoother for sure.

Your octanes are different across the pond vs. over here...also keep in mind that the discussion weve had before had much to do with continued use and build-up...

If the car is manufactured to require higher grade then i suggest you use it. My cadillac can run on 87 but the owners manual recomends 91. The older N* motors required 91 octain then they redesigned the compression ratio and thus allowed for lower grade gas which all N*s can use.

In an x-type i dont believe it has knock sensors to retard the timing to allow for lower octain levels. Thus you will get pinging and can possibly damage your emissions equipment. Stick with the 91.

JC, I've got two degrees, but the "University of Life" one seems to be the one I fall backonmost of the time (and was a lot less $$$ ).

Thanks again guys.

Skyjump............a masters in common sense will beat most other degrees hands down every time.
I've worked with some really brainy people in my time who've had degrees, spent years at university etc etc, and they've not had the common sense they were born with for the simplest of tasks!
[sm=WTFsgign.gif]is that all about? Its like when you learn to be really clever, you inhibit the part of your brain that uses common sense in everyday situations...lol
