Default Anyone interested in a kuda Phonebase for the X-type

Hey guys,

I bought a black Kuda phone base for the X-type. The one that attaches to the side of the center console. I never used it because I ended up buying a GPS instead of using my Treo as a GPS device because I decided the screen was too small. So I have it, never used. It's black in color. They are 55 plus shipping on the Kuda Site. I'd be willing to let it go for $40.

Let me know,

Just bought one two weeks ago! Dang!

I am actually mounting my GPS on that. It keeps it off the dash which I like. You could probably do the same?.?

I actually did that... for a few minutes with some velcro.

Then I realized a couple things.

1. I have a 4.5" widescreen GPS, so it protruded too much into the passenger side footwell. Got worried about people smacking it with their knee.

2. You realize that if you use your GPS alot, you want it at eye level, or at least in a place where you dont have to look down all the time to see where you are. That was my biggest concern.

So I bought the other kuda mount they have that is basically for GPS devices. This one mounts the gps above the hazzard light switch, basically in front of the center air vents. I am much happier now.

Take care,

George

Hey, I have some questions regarding that Kuda mount of yours if you dont mind. Im interested in the mount that goes right above the main console and the hazard lights. How well does it fit? Have you tried those air vent mounts for the gps ? I have a Garmin Nuvi nav that's about 5" x 3", would you recommend that Kuda mount (the one that goes over the hazard lights) ? Thanks. Sorry for all the questions.

Ok Ok... I get it...
As far as the air vents. Yes I tried that first. I noticed two things.

1. They aren't that steady, you can hear the gps vibrating at times. Maybe it was just the one I got, but regardless, I didn't have good results with it. But the mounting location looks better. I.e. It's closer to the dash.

2. It puts the gps VERY close to the vents. I don't think it matters as far as the air conditioning is concerned. It MAY matter with all that heat dumping onto the GPS directly. I may just be paranoid here.

Here is a pic of it on the air vent.... I have to take pics of the new kuda mount.

Then there are two pics of the GPS Velcroed to the Kuda Mount I'm looking to get rid of.... You can see how it protrudes into the passenger side.

Hope this helps...

Take care,

George

vm9312 androulakis? how you like it? Hey man do you need the parking brake bypass for it? If you do get a hold of me and i'll give you it! Where'd you get the dash kit? I'll be making one for mine hopefully sometime soon...I think a different radio would help the sale of the car...well see though!

I had a vm9312 for about 3 weeks. It was honestly a piece of junk. Maybe I just got a bad one but here is my experience:

It worked fine, but developed an intermittent problem of the screen going black, and then coming back. Then it got to the point of you having to wiggle the ribbon cable to get the screen to come up. I went back to the store, they offered to exchange it, but were out of stock. Finally on the last day I had it, it had come to the point of not getting a picture at all. That's when i ripped it out of the dash, packed it back in the box, and went back and demanded my money back.

They ended up giving me the dual xdvd710 for the same price, and i've been happy since. Better interface, full ipod controls, with included cable, and much more responsive touch screen. It's built a lot sturdier, and i haven't had a problem with it in over 4 months.

Take care,

George

Oh and btw... I had the dvd video bypass for both units.

Sweet the jensens take a code not sure about the dual...I personally don't like the looks of dual or quality of some regular cd players I installed...must have just had a bad unit as the couple I've installed were excellent units. I mean my customers only paid about $300 for the phase linear uv8 (made by jensen) and the vm9312 cost is just under $400. Should have spent the extra 100 for the pioneer! Although you couldn't get them cheap from there...where'd you get your dash kit from, nexxia?

Yes it's the nexxia kit. The thing that sucks is that it's a double din opening, and it has the map pocket it for the 2nd din hole, but the way the Jag dash is, there is the back of the heater box above what would be the top din hole, so the head unit will only fit in the bottom din slot. I ended up mounting my motorola bluetooth car kit control panel in the 2nd din slot, which works ok.
You have to do a bit of fitment work to the kit. Fabricate the side bolt mount holes. And provide some sort of support to the bottom of the radio, otherwise the nexxia kit likes to hang low.

It's kind of funny... I'm thinking the exact opposite of you. I think that i'm going to return the car back to stock to sell it. Put the stock cd player back in and call it a day. I used the nexxia harness as well, so I didn't cut any of the stock wiring up.

Take care,

George

You end up putting the stock one in let me know I might want it...so your saying it'd be hard to put a double din in? I'm planning on building one out of mdf if not...pretty sure that actually its the same as a ford harness for many ford vehicles!

It very well may be a ford harness.... I just bought everything from nexxia cause i was like escatic that I actually found a dash kit. I wouldn't do mdf in a Jag. The nexxia kit is a 95% color match and fits ok. If I wanted perfection, I would take the front plate off the hvac controls, as well as that little plate around the hazzards and basically paint them all with a plastic paint to match. it's the only part of the plastic that is that color in the car, so as long as it's all uniform the thing will look 100% factory. It honestly depends on the depth of the head unit if you can get a double din in there. I've seen it done, as long as all the wiring is on the bottom of the head unit you should be fine. At the time, I was trying to get a single din in unit in the top din hole. There is tons of room behind the ashtray / console for more wiring than you can imagine.

Chances are i'm going to keep my headunit for my next car, but the nexxia kit, as well as the steering wheel remote control adapter will be up for grabs.... I'll keep you informed.

I'll send you my guide to replacing the head unit in these cars if you want....

Take care,

George

Interesting, it does look better on the vents though ...

Pretty sure it is the ford harness that works...its actually that way with most car audio...I haven't seen the back of a avic-d3 to tell whether it would fit...I found a guy that installed a unit in his jag and made it out of mdf it will look just fine...more than likely though I'd go with perhaps some type of vinyl or leather if possible and maybe set it off a little bit...to me his looks closer to stock color than the nexxia kit you have not to mention the only pic he has of it in the car aren't very bright so you can't tell how good it looks, so I'd definitely go mdf...plus its cheaper and I could screw up many times on one 10 sheet of wood before I'd need another...i'd imagine that you paid about what 100+ for the stuff from nexxia?

I must say, that does look much better than I anticipated it would. The vinyl he used does match pretty well, although it seems like it would be an odd texture match, compared to the factory stuff. The nexxia kit i think was designed for the s-type, and just happened to fit the x type, but the dash finish is a perfect match to the S type. As far as cost i think at the time it cost me around $75 for the nexxia stuff, shipped to the US. Granted that was when the dollar was worth much more than it is now.... That's pretty much killing us now.

My buddy had a d3 I actually passed on... It's weird but I was stupid and didn't do my research.

I didn't realize that the d3 COULD play music from the ipod while navigating. It needs the map dvd in it the entire time while navigating. He got it, and didn't have or ever own an ipod, and was beyond disgruntled when he realized that he had to have the disc in it, and could only listen to the radio when navigating. He actually offered it to me for $250, and i passed because i didn't realize the only thing holding me back was a $30 ipod cable ...

It was a pretty solid unit, and from what I remember it wasn't that deep, Maybe six inches. I can meaure all the clearances of the nexxia kit for you. I think mine is coming out of my car in the next couple days.

I still am on the fence about selling the car but I think i'm at the point where it needs to go....

Take care,

George

Thats what i thought...he actually painted that it wasn't vinyled! There's no roughness to the face its all smooth like the x-type is already smooth so I don't reall think the material match is bad...the guy epoxyed it or used bondo...either way it looks pretty freaking good for less than $20 and a little know how!!!

Yeah that sucks you passed on that unit...they actually don't always need the disc...you have to load the disc and than it saves the info and than you can go back to the cd...unsure though can you listen to the am/fm of the radio with the nav disc running? I was unsure as to the playing of ipods when the nav was loading but thats good to know! Man you shouldn't have passed on that one! My dealer cost on it is like $750!!! I would have jumped on it...why didn't you let me know about it? Did you know any of the other spectacular features for that unit? You can change all colors from button illumination to background color...you can even preload a jaguar navigation thing so everytime the car starts the jag emblem comes on...

For the money you can't go wrong...to get a similar unit with similar quality features he would have had to have spent a few bucks more...wish I had the money to drop on one for mine...I'm unsure I want to get a s-type r but I must wait...gotta get rid of my escape and than the jag and than I'll be going from there!

As far as the D3, I have been physically in my buddy's car when the Nav was running and the D3 was playing the FM radio. It would interrupt the audio with a voice prompt when attention was needed to the routing. Apparently however it will play whatever audio source isn't reliant on the disc slot with the nav running. I didn't know THAT much about it, and I still had doubts as to whether I could get a double din radio mounted in the X-Type. I also didn't have much time to decide. He got it, installed it, and played with it for like a week or two, then one evening, we were in the truck and he was like I don't like it, because of the inability to listen to anything but the radio. He was also one of these guys that wanted the nav and gps showing the entire time.
I didn't realize you could load the map info for the route then remove the nav dvd. Either did he. Anyway i think he wanted an HDD based Nav solution, where he could just nav on demand, not have to swap discs etc etc.
He actually wanted to trade me for my setup, or just buy it cash for $250. I told him I would think about it but I doubt that it would fit in my car. Two days later I heard that one of our other friends bought it, and it's now in that guys 2007 Dodge Ram. All the customization stuff you describe is very nice...With that being said, I am still an idiot for passing on it. Oh well no use crying over spilled milk you know?
