Before I buy another Jaguar/2002 X-Type Qs
So it's a 2002 3.0 Auto X-Type with 40k on it. Dealer checked and said it was not affected by the trans recall. Only issue I can tell is it has the brake interlock clicking ALL the time. Very annoying, is it easy to fix? Anything else I should be checking for, any issues that are very easy to see/hear? Thanks!

Hey there, please check the X type quick FAQ link thread.....all the info you need, just read till your hearts content.
You might consider looking at an 03 - 04 if possible as some of the minor issues / problems that the early models did sometimes suffewr from were usually resolved by then

GMike, there was no actual autobox "recall", it was a "campaign". The only recall I can remember was on rear signal lights. The Customer Campaign on the early NA X-types had to do with poor original Jatco auto trannys on some. If a customer complained of difficulties, some of the trannys were replaced. In early warranty work on '02s, Techs were looking for bad trannys. The campaign closed in 2009 but you may still have a chance if you had an original bad one. Here's how to tell by serial #.
Transmission Serial Number Check Procedure
1. Open hood and place covers over fenders.
2. Check the transmission serial number to verify the status of the transmission.
3. The transmission serial number is located on the top of the transmission and can be viewed when looking down between the brake reservoir and the battery cover
If the transmission serial number starts with 11*****, 12***** or 13***** on 2.5L and 3.0L vehicles, or is between 1908384 to 1X09438 on 3.0L vehicles, or 1908190 to 1X08740 on 2.5L vehicles, the transmission MUST be replaced unless the serial number has a suffix "A" or "R" stamped behind the number.

Agreed. Stay away from a 2002. Preferably, 2004+
I had an inexorable amount of problems with my 2002. The design of the 50/50 split of power creates a weakness in all of the earlier 3.0 models, and will inevitably lead to failures in the transmission components down the road. I realize this is a touchy subject which many will argue such a notion, but my 2002 saw transmission failure TWICE, light failures, several window failures, moonroof failure, alternator failure TWICE, battery failure, fuel pump failure, and lock/unlock mechanism failure. One may find themself quite irritate by these quips unless technically savvy and able to ameliorate these problems themselves.

Boy, that seems like a high price for a 2002, even with the lower miles. I know used car prices have gone up quite a bit in the last couple years, but even so, that seems high for a 2002 X. I bet you could get a 2004-2005 for that price with some patience even if it might have some more miles.

YA $11,500 is overpriced but that is really low km...is that km or miles??.
im going to go take a look at a 04 for $8000 with i think 150km or so on it. its black on black 3.0L with the chrome trim on the bumpers and chrome grill..i dont know what the trim package is called for that.. its on the lower end of the x's in my area but for 10 you can get a 04 thats probably slightly lower km than the one im lookin at..i saw some at 11-12 with 60km on it. im just lookin for a winter car tho to replace my gas guzzler truck that can still handle itself in snow...awd is a must.

Also 3-4 year s ago I bought a 1998 XJ8 VDP for 13500 because it only had 33000 miles on it. im not apposed to spending a little more then a car is "worth" if its a one owner, with lower millage in almost new condition.
also the 98VDP was recently totaled (not my fault), and i'd really only be taking out a 3500 loan so its not THAT bad.

My 2004 was $10,500 with 45k on it a year ago. The dealer (BMW of Seattle) was trying to get $15,9 for it, but I kept looking and a month later knew they had to make a decision to wholesale it or make almost nothing on it - luckily they went for the latter option. It's been a good car over the last year - knock on wood. Anyway, a 2002 shouldn't fetch over about $9k even with absurdly low miles. Subtract 2-3k if it is an east coast car (rust).

I agree about the warranty, especially if you would buy it from a Jaguar dealer and would get the factory Select warranty. That deinitely would have some value, but still not enough to justify that price. Something else to consider is what trim levels does it have? If it's more of a base model (no nav., heated seats, premium stereo, Sport model, etc.) that would make that price seem even higher. Our cars are not the easiest for a dealer to sell, which is a definite plus when looking to buy. Make sure you do your research BEFORE you buy so you know differences/problem areas between the model years and the different option packages that were offered so you can make as an educated decision as you can. Don't think that just because you are getting a low mile Jag for $11K that automatically makes it a good deal. For what you can get for the money I think the cars CAN be a steal. Just make sure you know what you are looking at. I have a 2005 and have owned it for over two years and 40K miles and it's been fantastic. Good luck in your search.

stick with the 02-03 ive torn down transfer cases and trannys with my cousin at the jag dealer ...the most reliable and best in the snow are the 02-03...but you must bullet proof it a lot of jag owners neglet these two items ....on the 02-03 awd system you can put a snow plow on the front of your bumper and plow your whole neighborhood lol
this is just my opinion if it was me buying another x
when buying one ,first priorty is changing drivetrain fluids

I prefer the feel of the earlier AWD set up as well, but I was quite thorough in my maintenance and still had problems. I loved the car, but if I was buying now I'd opt for 2004 and up most likely. Mostly just for the less exposure to the elements. If that car you are looking at has spent its live in CT, I'd guess you have some sill rust even with those low miles.
Maybe keep shopping, you might find a newer model for around the same money or even less. Not much of a difference between 40k mi and 60k miles...I'll take less years.
OR if you hack them down to $8 or $9k then maybe pull the trigger.
