Gordonfrs, there are a few things that I think you are missing with this overall project that you are proposing. First off, getting 150 more BHP out of the 3.0L motor is probably possible (as the internals will handle the increased power), but doing it for the price that you want, that would be a challenge in itself. Might be possible if you are willing to do a lot of work yourself. The big thing would be needing to go to force induction (either turbo or supercharger) which would then require a complete rebuild of the motor and new pistons put into the car to lower the compression ratio down to around 9.0:1. The rebuild alone could potentially eat up the budget you are talking about depending on the condition of the motor. We are not even getting the parts for the more power aspect. Not lowering the compression ratio would either cause damage to the motor or require you to run a very high octane gas (115 would be the highest that you could probably find and then that is only in very limited markets).
Your bigger issue (and what would also most likely eat up budget by itself) is improving the transfer case to handle the increased power. It isn't the strongest platform to be starting with and while it may have the potential inside of it, I don't think anyone has really found what will make it handle the power like you are talking.
So, if you are looking to get a higher power car, you would be better served by taking the extra that you are planning on spending, trading in your X-Type and getting yourself say a 2000ish XK8. That will have close to the power that you are looking for and not involve lots of time working on something that may fail in the end and end up costing you way more than you are wanting to.
