Blown engine, advice requested on options.
Hi,
I have a 2002 Jag X-Type 2.5L, 84K miles, that I have been loving for the last 6 months. Due to a series of very unfortunate incidents, the car overheated last week, subsequently would not start and my mechanic has informed me there is oil in the coolant and is recommending a used engine replacement. He has given me a price of $4500 for the engine (with 88K miles on it apparently) and associated labor.
The car has been in South Florida all of its life and has a beautiful body and super clean interior. No rust anywhere, etc.
My question is this, what are the realistic options?
I have done a fair amount of work on the car, fuel injectors, plugs, brakes, wheel bearings, the like so enjoy working on it but the idea of me dropping the motor and tranny/sub frame in my garage seems like a daunting and dangerous job without some serious equipment.
That being said, I am sure there are things I am not considering that many of you have thought through already.
I would appreciate any advice on how to proceed. Honestly I'm heartbroken -- well as heartbroken as one can be about a car.
Would the idea of doing a rebuild myself be unrealistic or in conjunction with a machine shop?
Hopefully I have given all the pertinent information. Minus any new ideas I am afraid I may have to sell the car "as is" not sure what I might be able to get out of that even.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Bill

Chris Fixx strip it (YouTube video) & sell the parts. Just strip more than he did as he left some pretty wanted/needed parts (fuel pump, etc). IIrc, he said he would get ~$2,000 or so from the stripped components, then sell the scrapped car for a couple of hundred and move on.
If you elect to undertake replacing the engine, contact Dr. Dome, a member here and see what he has. He parts out X's. Great guy and fair.
