body work for "rust already?!?!"
For those of you that have read my post “rust already?!?!” you now know that Jaguar is going to fix the rust on my rocker panels and A-frame. (which i still can't understand after all the hell they put me through so they don't have to due it.) I was wondering how they fix it. How do you “fix” rust? Do they just sand it and paint it? Do they remove and replace body parts? And will they just paint the spots where the rust was or the whole car?

RE: body work for "rust already?!?!"
there are some dumb semantics involved..
If it is repaired under the surface rust part of the warranty they wont replace any metal. They will just repair the surface.
If it repaired under the perforation part, they must replace the metal.
I have seen pictures of the outer rocker panel removed. ( after first the plastic side skirt is removed also.) the inside of the rocker is much worse than the outside.
THey might replace the outer metal cover, but not sure about the next layer inside.
If you are diligent and inspect the body shop's work daily, they might do a good job..
Since this area is hidden, they will cut every corner they can if you dont watch them.
ask for pictures, and ask to inspect as soon as the prep work is done. Dont let them paint anything (not even primer) without you giving the OK. a proper repair could go upwards of 10k dollars at a decent body shop.

Definitely looks like a little more severe than surface rust..I think $10,00 would be a little on the high side in any case..maybe a little more thanhalf that in total repair...But they are pickin up the costs, so gives a flying flip how much it will cost..Just make sure they do a good job like Bo said.

also brace your self for:
remove all 4 doors,
remove front fenders
cut out all the rusted metal. serious surgery.
you will see a ton of rust behind what they cut out. they will sandblast all that stuff and that is the most important time to see..
there may be some small holes blown through from the blasting and the body shop will want to just patch that up. You will need to fight to get them to replace that metal behind the rocker.
keep in mind that everywhere they weld something, it will burn off the paint on the opposite side. and that will be a site of new rust.
On the lighter side.. take a look under your hood when you go see the car, if the battery is not disconnected, then insist you get a new one... it will be drained totally flat and that will drastically shorten its life.. even if they just charge it back up.Bring a digital camera, and dont confront the body shop too much.. the people that are paying the body shop is JAG, and you need to push the issues with them.

Yup, my '88 XJ40 rusted severely under thedoor trims as well. They cutout and removed all the rusted surfaces like you said and then they compressed sheer metal parts instead .As I recall, they welded the remaining door parts along with the sheer metal pieces that replaced the rusted ones .
We drove it a few years and again that cancer like rust revealed .
So, I think your best best is to replace all the parts .Let's say your door rusted and I think replacing that rusted door to a new one is the best way to go despite its cost .Ofcourse that applies if you're intended to keep your car for a long time otherwise justrepair it w/o replacing major items and then sell it
