Boot Won't Lock on My 2002 X Type

Like motorcarman said, if your car is out of warranty, you will have to do it yourself. I would just buy a trunk actuator off of ebay or a junkyard. It should only be about $40-$50 and will save you a lot of headache. I had to do this on my 02 because the lock actuators on the x types are notoriously weak.

FIX!!!
You just need to release the actuator. Its very simple fix that for some reason no one seems to of twigged on
step 1 - remove the plastic lock caseing
step 2 - remove the lock assembly
step 3 - remove the lock actuator (the white electronic motor)
step 4 - look down the side seam of where the actuator pulls the lock mechanism in (opposite side to where u attach the wire) and you will see where the seam creates an L shape. apply a small amount of pressure to the seam around the corner of the L as if u were trying to split the houseing but without actually doing so. the actuator should release as you do this
step 5 - WD40 the actuator and push in and out a few times to get it inside the houseing
step 6 - put back together
i hope this saves a few people some money

Hi Twistedtrash,
Thanks for your top tip here. I had exactly the same problem where the boot / luggage compartment / trunk would not lock and dash had red warning light.
I tried locking the catch manually but it wouldn't catch and stay so like you I decided the actuator must have stuck so fixed it easily thanks to your post.
Step 1 - No matter how I tried I couldn't unscrew the centre of the stoppers - with a decent screwdriver for leverage I popped both in 2 minutes, and then you can just push out the screw ready for easy refitting. (Before I tried brute force I spent 45 mins trying to get the screws out the centres.....)
Step 2 - Luckily I had a torque? 30 head to get the 3 lock screws loose - I loosened two and before the third disconnected the electrical catch.
I put silicon spray on the outside thick part without taking the actuator apart and it seems to run just fine (I note others** took it apart and freed inside though)
