Default Bought a salvaged X

I bought a 2003 X at an auto auction with 40,000 miles. Hit on the passenger side. I called the previous owner, who said that his wife hit a road divider. He ask me not to let his wife know that I had the car, because she loved it, and he bought her a new one, but it was not the same. He said there was no mechanical issues, and the service records were in the glove box. My buddy is repairing the X (He has had it since September 2006).
I am getting the X this Wednesday. I have been reading this forum for about 4 months and I am pumped!

That's great, but you do know that a "salvaged" auto cannot be driven on the street....

Good luck..

Actually racer (not to argue or anything) you can drive salvaged cars they are retitled as just that salvaged and you have to get it approved to be street legal. The government checks to see that everything is a-OK and the blinkers and all of that function. My pick-up truck was totaled out and my dad bought the truck back from the insurance company for 4k when they had just paid off the nearly 20k owed! The truck needed nothing my dad just had to re-apply the rear roll pan on the back with about 4 screws and a piece of 1x2 wood! After that he was able to drive away with it approved for being street legal. Motorcycles are the same way...

Cool...I suppose....
I tried it here in jersey with a 2001 porches that was totaled. Got the car for 10K, engine and tranny was in good shape...but after spending 8K and 3 years getting it fixed, I found out the hard way I couldn't legally drive it. After spending another 5K and transferring out of state 3 times to 3 different states, I finally got a legal certificate. I sold it for 15K.
I suppose it all matters where you're at and what the local state laws are...
I do know that if the deal sounds too good....than it probably is...

I always thought that as long as they were certified you could title it...that would be retarded if they didn't because the insurance companies would never be able to make money off of salvaged cars like they can with being able to sell the cars as easy fixes and what not. Once you sell the car part by part there are alot of parts left over for sure!

I heard that if you sell a salvaged title car in a different state, it gives it a clean title, so you should get a carfax before buying a clean title too.

Many ways to go about it to get it done.....doing it legally is one thing....
Their is a reason why they call it a "salvaged" vehicle. meaning, sure you can pick it up for salvage parts to get another vehicle working....or sell it off in pieces to make some money (like junk yards do)

But, buying a car that is totalled, meaning the insurance company doesn't want to spend money to get it fixed because it will exceed the value of the car, and getting it fixed yourself is really not worth it. Not to mention the headaches you will go through.

If it was me and doing it again, i would buy a salvaged car if i thought i could use the engine and tranny and other parts to have as spares....or for another project....

Yea, you can repair the vehicle, apply for a state inspection, have it inspected (checking for stolen parts) and retitled as a rebuilt title. Salvage vehicles are a good deal if you can repair it yourself, or have someone do it cheap (friend). You have to understand that you will not be able to trade it in, and resell is about 1/2 the retail. But if you want a good looking car with low miles that you plan on keeping, a salvage is the way to go. I plan on giving my X to my son when he is able to drive. It will be a nice first car and as you know "Jags" never get old.
