Sorry also having a problem with my TCM. It happened after I replaced the hose (don't know what it's called), but it goes from the air box to the throttle body. mine had a hole and the cruise control wasn't working. It fixed that but then I got the gear box fault and I had to limp home..

any advice? Thanks Wes

Wes: Let's start by checking the electrical connectors to the throttle body. They become brittle with engine heat and age, and might have a loose connection if bumped or the wires tugged when you fixed the throttle body hose.

Also, read the error codes and post them here. If you don't have a code reader, most auto parts stores will read the codes for free. Write them down in the order they appear, and post them to give us some clues to what your engine is unhappy about.

Regarding the sensor near the brake, are you asking about ABS sensors? Take a picture and post it to help us understand your question.

Finally, describe your car for us: year, engine, transmission, mileage. Better yet, add the description to your signature by clicking on "User CP" at the top right of this screen (stands for User Control Panel), then under "Settings & Options", click "Edit Signature" and describe your car.

Good Luck

Wes, the sensor that I think you are talking about is the wheel speed sensor (used for the ABS system and also the speedometer). This is held in place by a single bolt. If you back the sensor out, so you can look at the spindle, you will see the hole for the bolt. From there, everything should make sense. If I remember right, they made a groove for the sensor to sit in, so, it can only go in but 1 way.

Default Thanks guys

I'll get started, however I don't have a code reader and it won't make it to the auto parts store. when I do start it say ECM faults and TCM fault. that's a distinct possibility I pulled one of the wires out.

Thanks again,

Wes

Hey Guys, thanks for your help again! not sure what worked, but I pulled the air mass meter. It looked damp so I dried it off, and the TCM & ECM lights went out. If it runs ok I'll go and get the codes read.. Wes

Wes: Did you dry the mass air flow sensor? It measures the amount of air flowing from the air filter box into the throttle body, and is to the left of the battery, when viewed from the front bumper.

Since drying the MAF sensor apparently cleared the TCM and ECM lights, does your X-Type run well now? If 'yes', the old error codes from the wet MAF no longer apply and will clear themselves after a few start / run / stop cycles. Or they can be cleared with a code reader, so that you can see what, if any new codes appear.

Why two pictures of the brake light switch?

It keeps falling down and I can't figure out how to put it in correctly, I was hoping someone could shoot me a pic off what it should look like.

Thanks, DWCLAPP

Wes

Wes: Ah.... Now I understand why your 1st post asked about the "sensor behind the brake mounts". Thermo and I both thought (incorrectly) that you asked about the ABS / wheel speed sensors behind the 4 brake rotors. You're really asking about the brake light switch on the brake pedal.

Your pictures show the problem: The brake light switch is supposed to have 2 plastic tabs holding it in position, but 1 has broken off. Only the stub remains by your thumbnail in the 2nd picture. Here's what it's supposed to look like, with two tabs to hold it in position:

And from an eBay vendor:

Wes: You didn't mention why the mass air flow sensor was wet. After 93K miles, look inside from both directions and you'll like notice the little sensor within is discolored black on the upwind side that faces the air filter box. That's a build-up of grime particulate small enough to make it thru the air filter. Auto parts stores sell a specific spray to clean it. It's called Mass Air Flow sensor cleaner and CRC is a common brand. Don't use water, carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner. If it's really dirty, you should notice a performance improvement after cleaning it.

Wes: If the new brake switch is a different length vs. the old switch, don't worry, it's adjustable. If the new switch doesn't come with instructions and you need to adjust the length, try twisting the button while pulling or pushing it to the correct length.

Here's two example threads:

Hello again, I had just assumed that the air mass sensor got wet because the throttle body hose got brittle and cracked, but I'll clean it as well.

Thanks,

Wes

Default It's fixed!

I probably got ripped off, but I decided to take it to the dealership and they said it needed a new throttle body, I did need a new headlight, they said my brake fluid line was leaking and some other bits and pieces. I should have asked for the error codes, however 2,145 dollars later and it's running beautifully. I'm no mechanic and have health issues, my wife was pissed at me, so I just took it all in and got it taken care of, the positive thing is they did some free body work painted it to get the headlight to fit.

Thanks again guys.
I hope life is well,

Wes

Wes: Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. Glad your cat's purring again, and hopefully the wife too.
