Hi everyone my name is Bruce, my car is a 2006 (56 plate) Jaguar X-Type 2.2d Se estate car I have had this for about 5 years. The mileage is relatively low for its age approx 67K. This is mainly because I drive a van for work. Iam a semi retired and work as an Engineering Geologist on ground investigations contracts in the construction industry.
For a while the jaguar has a noisy rattle which a friend says is a lower pulley which the X type suffers from. The noise is very noticeable at tick over and not heard when driving If I have this done, which is quite expensive, would this cure the noise. The car has also not had the timing belt changed, should this be done at the same time.
Many thanks for any help and advice

Welsome again Bruce,
As you've already posted an Intro (https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...member-192886/), I've moved your question to X-Type forum for advice from members with the same model.

Hi Bruce,
If the crankshaft pulley has gone bad, on idle it has a metallic chirping type of sound.
This is due to the rubber that is bonded between the main pulley and the ribbed centre rim becoming unbonded.
This then causes the belt to slap and the slap causes the belt tensioner bushes to fail(collapse).
Also listen for a loud rumble when the aircon compressor is running, this is another symptom of a knackered belt tensioner.
So you will need to replace the belt tensioner as well as the crank pulley, and if you replace the crank pulley for the upgraded jag kit (C2S51547), it will last far longer.
Note that the upgraded pulley was never fitted to any x type diesel when new, the kit was an upgrade offered by jag during servicing where customers complained of noise.
So unless you ask for the upgraded kit, you will get the standard pulley replacement.
The upgraded kit consists of a wider and heavier pulley, a belt, a belt tensioner, and a new inner arch cover, to accommodate the wider pulley.
Paul.
