If you go for a late 03 or 04 most of theissues will have been resolved probably. You should get a lot of car for your money too. There's one or two of our members from that way that may be able to offer you some guidance in that area
Good luck

RE: buying my first x-type
Are you looking for something manual, or only auto? I thought that this was a great price for an 04 with barely 40K miles in Brittish Racing Green.
2004 X-type with 40K miles for 13K...NEGOTIABLE
And this one is not a lucrative, but it's from Payless Car Sales, and even though they are a bunch of Cubans there, they get great deals and take care of their cars as if they belonged to them personally.
A bit pricey, but they are very negotiable. 2.5L 2003 X-type with 26K miles for 15K!

RE: buying my first x-type
Welcome! Good luck as well! First things first I don't see any problem with getting a older or newer one...I'd get a newer one if that situation presented itself but I don't regret getting my 2002. Every one of these jaguars new or old have minor quirks but they make you love the car...these guys can vouch for that!
The price you speak of seems good too but the ones biggie posted are pretty decent as well. Biggie is from down there so he can help you the most for that area for sure...I try to steer people towards texascarsdirect.com as they seem to always have a large stock of jags and a great price with quality cars...haven't dealt with them personally but check them out...all their cars also either have a warranty or you can get them...the warranty I speak of is the factory bumper to bumper that starts and ends 4 years from titling the car or 50k miles...jag gives a certified warranty with their cars or sells one that covers for 7 years or 100k miles whichever comes first...I'd find one that is under warranty no matter the year!
Personally I prefer sport models to the regular models...here's the appearance difference...
Sport model
To me the sport has more appeal and is very very nice looking...
Curious how come you want blue or green only? Do you like black or no?
The problem I've noticed lately is that Florida and California have no selection or good prices! Michigan on the other hand we have many good deals...Forget who it was but his mom bought one from a jag dealer here in Michigan with warranty and it was sport and everything I was looking for last year for about 16k I think...I paid 15,400 taxes, title, plates....mine is a 2002 sport with sunroof and it had like 50k or low 60k miles...can't remember...
Here's one I found but a distance away from you at a jag dealer...best advice is hold tight and don't jump on the first one you see...be patient...
Black x-type certified...for not too bad of a price...
Click above to go to it...
Ebay has some as well

RE: buying my first x-type
well defenitly it must be an automatic.had already both addresses on my list to visit next week.
cadillac:why do you preferr the 3.0?
Well I really think blue or green fits the car best but of course this is my personal taste.black can be nice but I don't think so,but my wife is
already lobbying for more then 4 weeks to get me to buy a black x-type.we will see how that works out.
are there any technical aspects to which I have to pay more then normal attention to when buying a 2003/2004 x-type?
any tips/hints would be appreciated.thanks

Well there are many complaints about the dash materials falling apart or moving and creeking but I haven't noticed this with mine...there are a few other issues with the ones prior to 04 but can't remember as I haven't had anything major...just make sure you check the car out very extensively...there is no benifit to having the 2.5 liter as the gas mileage from what I've collected is much different...pretty sure the 3.0 is a better motor and the efficiency compared to the power isn't worth getting the 2.5...to me all colors look good but that all depends...I think all colors look good on them with the sport package! Listen to your wife and let the black in your color spectrum as you may have better luck finding a black on than others...

RE: buying my first x-type
I agree with quil AND cadi on the 3.0! Although many magazines say that the 2.5 is the best bang for your buck. The 2.5 manual is just as fast as the 3.0 auto BTW! If you need any help, let me know and I'll be glad to help by taking a day off on a weekend to give the Jag a thorough look threw. Even though I own an S-type, I'm quite knowledgeable with the X-type as well. Being here and reading through all the X problems, I know what to look for and where to look for it. I'd be glad to help...that is if you're 100% sure that you're ready to buy the car and you want that extra peace of mind.
