Default A/C fun...

I got around to replacing the A/C compressor control solenoid today and discovered a lot of metal in the filter. I flushed the orifice as best I could with spray brake parts cleaner and replaced the filter with the new one from the kit, I didn't get a good seal on the backing plate (fortunately) and the compressor is now leaking black/gray freon which is telling me not only is the system contaminated, the compressor if not already toast, is short lived. Time to evac and flush the system, install a replacement compressor and a new receiver/dryer. On the bright side it was only about 105 in my garage today

PS Las Vegas/Henderson Pick A Part had a pair of '03's and a '05 on Sunday (I didn't check the door jamb for pro date). All 3 had early FCM's, and neither of '03's had a engine cover (I just bought one on eBay).

Yeah, well that sucks. The compressors are pricey. Did the Jags at pick-a-part have compressors? Or maybe contact dr dome to see if he has one? May as well refurb everything you can in the system (drier, receiver, accumulator, etc.).

The argument then is buy the kit (~$130 like on Amazon) which you can use on both your kitties or pay ~$160 for a one time a/c shop to evacuate and charge the system. Don't forget the oil if doing it yourself.

I can get a used compressor for free (a perk of having spent 25+ years working in the auto dismantling industry) and I'll only need to buy a new receiver/drier,

I'm thinking the best plan of action is going to be: 1. R&R the bad compressor and receiver/drier, 2. Flush the lines, 3. Put the system back together, and 4. Take it to a pro shop for evac and recharge. One thing that I find interesting is why did Ford elect to use the "scroll" type A/C compressor? From what I've read about them on Ford specific forums .. There's something inherently wrong with them. God how I miss Sanden compressors..
