Here is a post that covered this before. Try having the repair done per the bulletin I posted and you'll probably be ice cold again. A lot of folks condemn and replace the compressor when this is all that was needed. I any case, always try this first.

Actually, it's pretty easy, you just have to have it evacuated. The oval plate is at the rear of the compressor, remove it, take the valve plunger and spring out and reverse their order and put the plate back on. If you are careful you can probably re-use the "O" ring seal. I have done that before if we were out of stock. That seal is the only part necessary. Make the switch, vacuum the system and charge it back up.

Good luck!

how many man hours do u think one needs to put in to do this? i opened my bonnet and realised that there is not enough space around the engine, how do i go around this heddle? Again in doing the above described by xjrguy, will the gas in the system discharge or i simply need to top it up?

OK, here's the deal. See the picture for the location of the plate on the compressor. It's not very difficult to do actually.

1. The refrigerant has to be recovered first, the system must be empty.
2. Per the bulletin, remove the plate at the rear of the compressor [circled in the picture]
3. Remove the valve and spring behind the cover, reverse their order [not turn them around], install a new "O" Ring if you have one and reinstall the plate. In a pinch I have re-used the "O" Ring.
4. Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system.

That's all there is to it. Works great for the S-Types mentioned in the bulletin as well. I just can't believe how many compressors have been replaced when this is probably all that was necessary.

Cheers,

Youll dump a pound and half of freon into the atmosphere. So have the system evacuated, and ive never had to replace a seal doing this. Evacuate freon, dont fully remove the plate, leave 1 bolt in but loose enough to hold the plate in place to the side. It makes it easier to swap the piston and spring. Then push the spring in as you slip the plate back over the spring and install the other bolt, and tighten. Recharge the system with 1.5 pounds freon and your done.
EDIT, LOOKS LIKE BOTH STEVE AND I WERE TYPING AT THE SAME TIME
