Default Can’t find amplifier

Hello everyone. I have a 2003 jaguar X type. I was told by Jaguar after they ran my vin that I have a premium Sound-system but with no amplifier. I do have the little separate component speakers right in the door handle and a sub as well. I also have a six CD changer in the driver side trunk. That is also where the amp is supposed to be and it is not. I go to have a modern radio installed and the professional installer said that there is an amp in the car. I personally looked in the trunk space driver side there is no amplifier, and there are no hanging and open connectors . DOES ANYONE know where else this amplifier could possibly be? It’s definitely going to affect the radio installation both in the wiring and the final price point. Thank you and have a good day.

Looks like the premium sound option in your car still fundamentally runs off the head unit, with the sub sampling the multi-channel speaker level outputs from the head unit to provide a balanced sub additional response.
Long story short.....doesn't look like they had a dedicated additional power amp.

Default Thank you

Thank you for sending that schematic. I was starting to go crazy thinking I was missing something. May I ask you another question. Do you know how much wattage each speaker in that car holds? I don’t think it could be that much. 20 W max? I am looking to put in an aftermarket Alpine large screen radio so that I can have Bluetooth capabilities, cell, phone capabilities, and a back up camera. So I’m assuming that this radio that puts out 50 W per channel is going to be more than enough to push not only the door speakers, but the component speakers in the handle as well. Would you agree? Once again, thank you for your time.

Looking at some prior threads on speakers, the consensus seems to be that members that have replaced factory speakers for better sound performance from their factory head unit opted for at least 40W RMS or 80W peak speakers, 4 Ohm resistance. By all accounts the factory head units were relatively capable, so I would expect the factory speakers would probably be able to handle up to 40 watts but no more.
They are known to fail, so I wouldn't recommend over driving them with a larger head unit.
The factory tweeters are wired in parallel to the mid/base door speakers and just have a capacitor in series to limit the energy and lower frequencies they receive, so again if you are going to a higher power head unit and intend to punch it, then you might run the risk of overdriving the factory tweeters.

Default Thank you !!!!!

Thank you so much for your responses. This really helps me out a bunch. It clears up a lot of questions that I had. If the radio was working, I wouldn’t be touching this at all. I’m actually very nervous to start digging in and cutting things up so to speak. I just don’t wanna open up a can of worms but I do need music and I do want to something modern and up-to-date. I mean who uses cassette anymore.
……..
and if I may one very last question, because you seem to be extremely knowledgeable. If they have to pull the door panels off to get to the speakers, where would you go to buy door clips for this Jaguar? Once again, thank you in advance for all your time and effort.

I think the door clips are part number C2S13494 although there is another part number C2S13494 which might be applicable, you want to look at the images of this part number to see if it matches the clips you are looking for.
You can pick them up on eBay in packs of 10 or 20 by the looks of it.

Just to throw another red herring into this, the original retaining clips were colour code and I found this reference also pertaining to part#
C2S33674020
DOOR PANEL CLIP VIOLET COLOR PACK OF 20 FITS 2002-2008 X-TYPE. Replaces C2S24976 GREEN CLIP, C2S33674 (C2S33674020)

So in all honesty, you probably need to pull a door card and take a look at and measure what you currently have to see which of these is applicable to your car and if the door car uses just one type or used more than one type depending on location on the door card.

Default Amaxing

Thank you for all this wonderful information !!!!
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to point me in the right direction. I’m just trying to make sure that if I rip something apart, I can put it back together again properly with the correct parts. The last thing I want to do is Jerry Rigg this thing together.

Default Thank you Dell

Thank you Dell for that information regarding the
320 W Alpine system. I never really knew how many watts the system ended up being. Pretty amazing for some thing 20+ years ago.

Premium systems had no amplifier until MY 2004. I can't find any reference as to the power output of the non amplifier system, but it's surely unlikely to match the later amplifier models.

Armstrong. Thank you very much that is the consensus of all the wonderful people who have replied. It was a bit of a mystery to me as I never owned a jaguar before but now I can move forward confidently and pull out the radio which is obviously the problem and put in something more modern with Bluetooth capabilities, and navigation and back up camera.

Do a search in this forum for member Dennis Black. He has numerous "how to" guides for single din, double din radios and now the "Tesla" screen replacement of original.
