Can a Jaguar X-Type be supercharged or turbocharged?

Jaguar themselves did back in 2003, though details are few and it never made it into production. They've still got it in their collection. Note that it's an Estate version.

I’ve Been seriously considering this myself. But first priority is to get my x-type up into full working reliable condition.
10.5:1 compression is ok as long as the boost is kept under control and not too extreme with a good waste gate etc etc.
I don’t want to go all out and make it stupid just a low boost fun motor that is a cool talking point etc.
A small turbo like from a used “Honda turbo kit” , and build my own piping etc and fuel management mods etc.
the transfer case worries me more than the motor and compression as I will probably keep it around 8psi at max.

I see you can squeeze a turbo with some pipes in the X-Type, but "super charge"? Where 's the room to put super charge on top of the engine? Of course you have to cut a hole on the hood, And how do you run the drive belt? It's going to be a X-ugly Type.

I believe some professional garage can do, but I imagine any individual can do that at home, the same Duratech engine but you look at under hood of X-Type; where you find the room to all the plumbing and turbo charge in there, or how do you put the blower between intake manifold and engine block, and where to put the pulley and the belt?

There are three supercharger kits known, you can search around the forum to a tiny bit of information about them. I'm only aware of two cars that had such kits fitted, and the other one was reportedly crashed long ago.
Anyway, if you really want to spend +$10k on tuning up an X-Type (might make more sense to start with a 3.0?), do go ahead & post the results. I wouldn't hold my breath though, we see these threads every now and then...

lifeonplanetvon, if you have any number of miles on the engine (over say 20K miles), the first step is rebuilding the motor to handle the sudden change in power. So, there is going to go about $7-8K (USD) easy. Now, you have a turbo kit to add. Since this is going to be custom, it is going to be fairly costly unless you have some welding skills along with fabrication skills. Assuming you don't have those things, plan on another $4K or so. Now you need a computer to control all of this (factory computer is not capable of handling this). So, you are going to have to get an aftermarket ECU for say a Duratec engine (preferrably for a Lincoln LS, since it should have the variable valve circuitry in it). Then you have to hope that there is enough similarity that it will work with the other systems of the car. So, a quality aftermarket ECU is going to set you back about $3K. So, you are looking at about $15K to have a reliable motor. So great, you have the power. I can almost guarantee that on the first full throttle launch you do, that transfer case is going to detonate on you. if not the first, by the fifth. The transfer case is the weak link in this drivetrain. So, good luck finding an afternarket transfer case from say something like a Subaru WRX and adapting it to work in the Jag. I would say if you have someone do this for you, you can plan on them spending another $10K of your money based on time and the general experiments to see "will this work". So, you are up to $25K to have an X-Type that is making 400 hp that is AWD. You would probably be better off seeing if you can slide some other type of motor into the car and then going from there, just scrapping all the Jaguar specific stuff. But, now you are looking at having to rebuild the dash to handle the new gauges and whatnot. But, I think you are going to find that this is going to be a lot easier than adapting the Jaguar stuff. Probably a lot cheaper too. Thinking getting something like a 3.5L V6 from an Edge or something of the like would be your best bet. Then all you would have to do is adapt the front CV joints to have the Ford pieces on one end and the Jaguar ones on the other and then having a custom rear driveshaft end put on the forward end to match up to the ford transfer case. You may even get lucky there as there are lots of Ford designed stuff in the X-TYpe and you may get lucky that something will match up. I know there are tons of aftermarket stuff for the 3.5L motor. Then it is just a matter of will everything fit under the hood.
