Car Died on me again on the highway!!!!!! Need Help Advice????
I have a 2002 X-type 2.5 Liter with 75,000 miles.
My car just died on me again on the highway. The engine just shuts off. So I pull over on the shoulder and it restarts no problem. This only happened to me 5 times so far in the past 4 months but the last 2 times it happened within 2 weeks.
There is no check engine light on, no warning lights on at all?
My mechanic pulled this code off P1111? no other codes?
My mechanic couldn't figure it out and just said to keep driving until it gets worse.
But having the engine cut out in the highway is not a great thing! you guys have any ideas where I can check?

With a cursory glance at your problem, I would say your engine bay fuse box is bad. That is why it is not logging codes because the engine management cannot stay powered up. Start by replacing the engine management relay. If it keeps doing it I would go for the fusebox.

the lights on the dash is fine. The battery light and check engine light go on. As if the car just stalled. just like the on position when you just before you start your car. I don't think its the electrical failure?
So what does code P1111 mean anyone?
SHAGUAR: what was the final diagnosis when you brought it to the jaguar dealer to get it fixed?

Here is an update:
my check engine light came on with the following codes:
EGR System
P0442 Leak emissions
so my local mechanic cleared the codes and I put in some fuel cleaner and it seems to be running better.
I took it to a local jag dealer and got ready to grab my ankles but the service manager told me to save money by not paying the normal $230 diagnostic fee and instead get a full fuel injection cleaning for $199 from the codes he thinks my engine is just misfiring.
and he recommended that I also get a transmission flush for $170. I asked about the Transfer case and he said they never flush that out.
What do you guys think? I have now 76,000 miles on my car and the transmission was replaced at 45,000 miles. the transmission flush sounds reasonable and I wish they could flush out my Transfer case as well.
Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I think there must be some kind of error. Is it a Jag dealer? Or did you unwittingly take it to a chevy place. j/k
I do not see the injector flush as being the cure for your car. I have had many x-types that shut off that way and they were all caused by a bad engine bay fuse box. It will leave everything else powered up, but shuts down engine mgmt. system. Next time it does it, look at the pats led by the cupholder and see if it is illuminated prior to you cycling the key.

No it was definitely the jag dealer. they had the new XF's there. Was not that impressed with them.
Is the Pats LED you are referring to the DSC traction control light by the cupholders? if so do you mean check to see if it is lit up?
FJT: last question, how do I check to see if its the bad engine bay fuse box? Is this easy to do? can you please send me some steps to check it out?
thanks!

Sorry yes.....Passive anti theft system.
It is tough to describe. You need to catch it while it will not restart. You are lucky and unlucky as it is dying on the road and probably jiggling it back to life. If it is a problem, it will start to do it with far more consistency.

Ok, My PATS button when pressed turns off my DSC and when I press it turns it back on. But you're right it does blink as if it was an alarm.
I will definitely keep an eye on it if it stalls on me again. What should I look for if it does stall again?

RE: Car Died on me again on the highway!!!!!! Need Help Advice????
Hi guys,
Just chiming in here because I think I have the exact problem on my 2002 3.0 X-type.
I get the same code (P0442) and mine also shuts down.
I have found that mine only shuts down when I am around 1/4 tank of gas or less. I don't think mine is electrical though, because it doesn't just turn right off. It acts more like it is running out of gas (loses power and finally starts "chugging" over the course of a 1/2 mile). As it "chugs" I lift my foot from the gas peddle slightly and the chugging stops. It will continue to do this until it simply has no more power to move the car and stops. I sit on the side of the road for a minute, and restart. It will then go another 5 to 10 miles before shutting down again unless I fill the tank.
hankycbr - Does yours shut down the same way?
FJT - any ideas with the added info?
Just from searching past posts I can see you are a HUGE asset to the forum!
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
Jeff
