Ruben, I would check to make sure that you electric fans are functioning. Sitting in traffic at idle/very low speeds and having the vehicle overheat is a sign of bad fans. When cruising down the highway you won't see the problem as the air flow across the vehicle is sufficient to cool the motor.
If your fans are functioning properly, then it is possible that your water pump has corroded enough that the blades on the impeller are almost gone and at idle there isn't enough of the blades left to get adequate flow. But, get the engine RPMs up and it can then move the water sufficiently to keep the motor cool. But, I am placing money on the fans being your issue based on what you are describing.

remember the temperature gauge lies... it is a massaged signal, so that it does not move to the red area until the car is truely too hot.
The gauge is programmed to stay dead centre as long as the car is somewhere in the "normal" zone.
If it gauge is moving to the red, stop immediately, or you will do damage.
replace the thermostat, it is cheap, easy to do, and a common problem.
