Default Car vibrates when letting of gas..driveshaft ?

Hello guys,

My car sometimes will shake or vibrate if I am doing about 30 and just take my foot of the gas. What could this be?

Thanks for any help

Possibly a motor mount.

Could be the propeller shaft..it was a known issue, or the center support bearing was also an issue...but they come as a complete unit; Shaft, both half's and support bearing.

Thanks for the reply. At this point it's not happening all the time, but when it does its in the 30 to 40 mph range and it happens if I accelerate, let my foot of and then accelerate again. It's like a wobble or shudder.

Spike, try applying some grease to the carrier bearing (the bearing supporting the center of the rear drive shaft) and see if your problem changes. If it decreases significantly or goes away, then you have confirmed that your problem is the carrier bearing. If it continues, then you are looking at something else. But, normally with our cars, it is the carrier bearing that is the issue.

What you describe sounds a lot like a U-joint that is starting to go. But, that would be taken care of with the new rear drive shaft.

Thanks for the reply

Is the rear driveshaft something I could change myself? I would just prefer to get one and replace it.

Thanks

Crawl under and have a look..I seem to recall it would not be a tough task for anyone that has a set of metric wrenches and a little mechanical skill..

Better wait for Thermo to chime in though ..he'll know for sure.

Spike, you can do it yourself. NOt that hard of a job as long as the bolts play nice. So, let PB Blaster be your friend. Quite a few members have changed this shaft on their cars in their driveway. So, with a little effort, you should be able to do it.

iawgnix, no, you do not have a rear drive shaft. In your case, this is what I would tell you to do. Start up the car with the hood/bonnet open. Put the car into DRIVE (D) and then with your foot FIRMLY!!!!!! on the brake, give the car a little bit of gas to apply some load. What you are looking for is the motor to make dramatic movement. The motor should move 2 CM or so depending on how hard you are on the gas pedal. If you have a bad motor mount, it will be fairly obvious as you are going to think the motor is coming out of the engine bay.

In your case, pay attention to when you turn, especially when you are accelerating going around a corner. Do you hear this same whir/ticking sound? If so, then odds are you have a bad CV axle. A local mechanic can narrow down which one is bad. If you want to crawl under, normally if you grab on to the axle and try to shake it, one side will wiggle some, the other will be fairly solid. The one that wiggles is your bad one.

On another note, I am wanting to make it back to where you are. I was there back in 2004 and completely enjoyed my time. Stayed at the Charleton Hotel one night there off of the main road near the naval base.

no, unfortunately not yet. I would like to get input from someone who has changed the rear driveshaft before I try it myself. i have been trying to track down a new one, but all I find are used ones on Ebay and elsewhere

Now I have a horrible clunking noise when I stop the car in drive (tried it in reverse and no sound). I just got under the car and saw the outer cv boot I had redone exploded again, so for sure I have a bad right cv axle and possibly the rear driveshaft Chris mentioned earlier . Car sometimes has a bounce or wobble when I let go and push on the gas again and now clunks and pops at stops. Strangely enough it isn't popping when I turn .

I am not too happy with my X type right now

Me neither. I haven't found a fix for my problems as well. Btw, I just saw another post https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...estion-100366/ looks like we're not alone.

Yep still on the same boat.

I tried to take a video of the noise. Please excuse the noise of the keys and listen from the 17 second mark to the end. The clunking noise can be heard as I stop the car

Thanks

Do you get the vibration every time you release the gas peddle or only occasionally? I get mine occasionally and thus my mechanic says he can safely rule out the driveshaft.

I have taken the drive shaft off. It should take you about 30 to 45 min with the right metric tools. Make sure u spray all the bolts with pb blaster about an hour before working on it. Call me and I can talk you through it if you need to. Also I have what u need my parts car setting on the shelf.

Thanks and good luck,
The Dr!

Thanks Dr. I might take you up on that. The clunking on stops as heard on the video was not coming from the front, apparently. My rear calipers had been grabbing and finally seized, now that brand new calipers are in, the clunking at stops is totally gone . Car still vibrates when letting of gas and then giving gas again, so I am looking the replace that rear drive shaft still.

Thanks!
