Default check engine and limp mode

When this symbol comes up on the instrument panel, is it something you should really worry about????

I drive a X type 2.0 lt Se diesel, bought through a trader, now the this amber light has appeared so was wondering what does it really mean, i.e. is there something seriously wrong or what????

The car seems ro drive ok, been up and down the gear box, driving quite hard, the peformance actually seems that bit better for some reason!!

Many thanks for the sensible replies.

Default Sorted

Just in case anyone was wondering, got the problem fixed turned out to be nothing really, so there you go.

Took it to an auto electricians in the Glasgow area, he in turn connected it up to the computer and managed to assertain what the fault was and sorted it out for me, the guy was cheap as chips too considering.

Default Yes

Yes he did explain that it was the, "the air intake unit or valve" if the problem arose again then obviously it was the air intake valve, assuming that he checked it through the computer!

All in all I was happy with the out come and I'm sure the guy wasn't ripping me off as they often do.

Would you believe it the light came on again, so guess wot i did????

I just turned the key in the ignition switch on/off a couple of times really quickly (about 4 times) then on again, heard a beep sound, looked at the dash, hey presto light out!!!!!!

So we'll see what happens next.

It still hasnt by the sound of it solved the root cause of the problem.
By turning the key on/off 4 times quickly you have entered the keyfob programming mode. The beep sound is the car asking you to press the lock button on any fobs you want to be programmed to your car to allow only those fobs to be used.

Default I know

I know it hasn't cured the root of the problem but seeing that light on is annoying, been driving long enough now to realize when the car your driving ain't running right.

After turning the key in the ignition so many times in quick succession why did the light go out then when it was supposed to programming the key fob???
