Don, to check the operation of the door handle, you will need to remove the inside of the door. Now, with the door unlocked, observe the reach rod running between the exterior door handle and the latch mechanism. Does this rod start to move as soon as you start to move the door handle? If no, then you are probably looking at a bad exterior door handle. if the reach rod moves as soon as you move the exterior door handle, then you are more than likely looking at a bad latch mechanism.
Of note, if the door operates every time from the exterior when you manually unlock the doors, then you are looking at a bad lock/unlock motor for the door lock mechanism.
Hope this helps.
