Default Column Knock

Dear All,Please show me to the appropriate thread, I could not find it.
I am looking for ideas, experience with a specific noise that suddenly appeared a few weeks ago.

X-Type, 2003 Exec. 3.0, automatic, LHD. High mileage.
There is a strong knocking sound from the right front of the car when driving over potholes or speed bumps. Also, the ride over these or jolting road is no longer smooth. The steering is perfect, accurate. There is no dead spot at all, the car drives straight. My mechanic checked it recently and found a horizontal bar behind the wheel that was loose (the same on the left side was ok). I am not sure which rod. Looking at the images in the Workshop Manual, it may had been the tie-rod or the stabilizer bar, but maybe I am wrong. He said that he probably would have to replace the Steering Rack.
He is a very good mechanic, and he is usually right. But he is a Porsche-specialist, this is the first X-Type he is doing (he is also a close freind, this is why he does this for me). But.... There is absolutely no steering problem. It comes only from the right side. I checked the Manual, and neither of the listed symptoms are there for a faulty steering rack. It defines a "Column Knock" for "running over cobblestones or rough pavement.". While the description of this does not match with what I have, it does say that it occurs when "steering column shaft contacting other portions of the column assembly".
I will revisit him on Thursday, he will have more time to work on this. And I am worried. Replacing the steering rack would be a huge job and would also be very expensive. What is your opinion? Is it possible? Or could there be something else? A ball joint or socket problem? How would you approach this?

Thank you so much
Laci

Mine was this part. A "clunk" on one side and a "rubber against metal sounding squeak" on the other. The squeak is from the rear oil bushing not tolerating very high temperatures (Utah is a desert). There's a TSB on it with a different part that has different high temperature oil in it. Unfortunately, I could never find it, so replaced with the OEM part. I did the sway bar links at the same time because I was in there. Sadly, yesterday we had a very unusually high temperature day after freezing cold winter and damned if going over the speed bump I have a squeak on the (LH) drivers side again, smh. Been a couple of years since replacing so I know they're good. I'll live with the squeak.
There is a thread on my experience replacing them with pictures if interested. Mine turned into a bit of a mess because the "captured nut" buried into the body that you support dropping the frame to get clearance for the rear bolt removal (HEED= REVERSE ON REINSTALL) spun loose creating a big challenge.

The other clunk I had was from the rear. It was worn out rear front lower stabilizer bars. Easy replacement.

My suspicion: the front stabilizer bar bushings. I had exactly this on my x-Type. After much investigation ($$$$) these bushings, which looked good, were removed and new OEM Jaguar bushings (which have a revised design) were put in. Silence!

Dear Dell Gailey & sov211!

Thank you so much for your answer. I really hope it something like that. I will look after those bushings, can you give me a part number please?

Front (ball joint/rear oil filled bushing one) =
Front swinging arm RH lower =
C2S46697
Front swinging arm LH lower =

C2S46700
Front stabilizer (drop link) =
C2S26883
Rear front lower control arm =
C2S50863

Heed that final torquing of these must be done with full weight of the car on them. Snug up, lower, torque.
Then 4 wheel alignment with REAR done first. Jag oddity that REAR is done first. Ask me how I know after forum member Jag tech told me why the first one ate my tires off...

IF YOU EVER HAVE rear UPPER arms causing inside tire wear and tires like this = / \, look up member Thermo ('s) fix. Now called car has been Thermo'd! Mine was done by the previous owner when I went to change mine.

Thank you for all the help.
I just came by from my mechanics with bad news: it is definetively the steering rack, the right bushing. Hopefully it is renewable and I dont need to buy a new one.
