Default Continental Tires for the CAT

Ordered 17 225 45 91W Conti Extreme Contact DWS today because I have a great deal that couldn't pass.

I've been reading the reviews from the vendor (from quite a while and wanted to get this tires), but want to check if anybody have this or used it on there X. Can you comment, give your opinion to the overall ride & noise.

Thanks much.

Rockyf, I'm running the DWS and they've been great. Even wear after 8k miles.

I have the DWS on my stock rims that I'll use for the winter. I've put about 4K on them and they have been great so far. They are nice and quiet.

Got it installed today & initial impression - nice ride & quiet.

Also confirms that the vibration & noise is not through the transfer case, misalignment, prop shaft, bearings or power steering.

I think the wheel alignment I did 2 weekend ago helped the new tires with the vibration and steering play.

Anyone ever try the Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position tires?

They have great reviews and compare favorably to the ExtremeContacts on TireRack. However I haven't heard of anyone trying them on the X-Type.

Basically when I buy tires in a few months I'll get either the Potenzas or the ExtremeContacts, but if the Potenzas aren't worth the price premium for this car then I'll go with the ExtremeContacts.

Can't quite remember but I think when I looked at the Potenzas the side wall was really, really stiff.

So it seems that the ExtremeContacts seem to work best with this car then; of course, that's a matter of opinion.

I personally find the balance between a back-breakingly stiff suspension and a standard mid-size sedan suspension to be ideal. Basically I like a stiffer than average suspension but not too stiff. With the low profile ProContacts on 17" rims, my X-Type really hits that sweet spot.

I have the ProContacts on now but they're nearing the end of their life. I haven't been through a winter with them yet since I just bought this car a few months ago. I want basically the same feel as the current tires with good performance in light snow. If you guys think the ExtremeContacts can deliver on that then I'll get those and save over $100 compared to the Potenzas. I'd really like to hear from someone who has the Potenzas though.

Evan, suggest you start up a new thread with the Bridgestone Potenzas on the subject. I'm sure it will get more attention with folks using Potenzas.

One more thing to add in Conti. Improve fuel efficiency. This is the first time I've seen my X registered a 29 MPG (highway driving)in the odometer message center. I bet it will get better once I finish up changing the fuel filter & spark plugs.

Good Luck!

Default bridgestones

I have the bridgestones on my jag. I have about 40,000 miles on them but they will need to be replaced before winter. I was not impressed how they handled in the winter, i just could never trust them. But overall i would say they are an alright tire, not the smoothest ride due to the fact they are a z rated tire. i am going with something different when i replace them this fall for a tire that will be better in the winter.

For me, on my X-Type with BBS 18x8.5" Indianapolis Alloys.... I think the Pirelli PZERO ROSSO ASSIM (225/40ZR18 92Y XL) are very hard to beat they provide; excellent grip, wear resistance are super quiet and offer greater comfort to my ride.

Then again, theres no snow here - ever.

Just my 2 cents

I just put the continental DWS on our 98 XK, only a few hundred miles on them so far,so only opinion at this point is they are quiet and provide good grip in the heavy rains of late.Happy so far but way early in their life.

Thanks for the review, I think I'll go with the ExtremeContacts and save about $100. It seems like everyone who has them, loves them

TireRack has the Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS for $115 each, while the Continental DWS are $116 each. The Michelins, ranked 4th, are the most expensive.

I'm due for tires. Prices being equal, I may try the Bridgestones. I find them to be more aesthetically appealing, at least. I've had Bridgestone Dueler Revos on several of my trucks. Best AT tire I've ever owned.

I just got Potenzas put on this past weekend, they are way better than what was on before, quiet smooth ride. got them on sale for $114 each on sale. The model was G019

The Michelin PPS are the best tires I've driven. They cost twice as regular tires, but they are worth every penny.
look no further
