Coolant and crankshaft sensor.

I replaced both these on my 2002 xtype 120,000 miles they both made the car run very bad.
However the engine light never came on! You can not always trust code to come up.If your engine runs bad cold but fine when warm its probably the coolant sensor very cheap and easy to replace.
If car misses while running or cuts out completely but restarts ok its probably
crankshaft sensor cheap and easy to fix too.

For weeks I chased a stalling problem on my '03 X-Type that only occured during warm-up. Once car reached operating temp there was never an issue. CEL light never came on and there were no stored codes. Checked wiring and resistance to TPS and accelerator, checked and replaced coolant temp sensor, etc. but no faults found. After some research I learned that a failing CPS (crankshaft position sensor) can cause sudden stalling so I went ahead and removed it. The plastic body that encases the magnet was cracked, probably by the heating and cooling cycles, and it allowed oil to enter and presumably short the circuit. For some reason once the car was fully warm the circuit was maintained. I replaced the sensor - think it was less than $20 - and the problem went away.
So I agree that CPS may often be overlooked as a culprit. It's accessible after removing right front wheel and small fender splash panel and is mounted just behind the crank pulley.
