Coolant Hoses

I bought a new coolant tank and I going to replace the nipple and hoses while I'm at it. I need to buy some silicon hose by the foot but I not sure how many to create or the width I need to make sure the coolant has enough space to flow properly in the hoses without being restrained by debris etc.
Which measurement would you recommend: 1/4", 3/8",5/16", 1/2", or 3/16"? Is there two coolant hoses? One on top and another to go the radiator? How many nipple do I need? I plan on getting brass ones.
Thanks

tsimms: It's not clear which coolant hoses you're asking about. The coolant reservoir has 2 return hoses, each 3/8 inch, and one larger hose (I'm guessing ~1 inch) which supplies coolant from the reservoir to the water pump.
Larger hoses also flow coolant to / from the radiator. Auto recycler's sell whole sections on eBay.
