Coolant tank failure
#21
My new tank should be arriving soon. Got some new coolant, water, radiator flush, and stop-leak just as preventative. It actually worked out because radiator maintenance is something I would've neglected for a while if the tank hadn't broke. My first thought was to just replace the tank and add a gallon of new coolant, but looking inside my old coolant tank, I could see a bunch of flaky gunk at the bottom of it, almost like bits of wax. I figure that can't be good if it's floating all around the radiator. After looking into it I was surprised you are supposed to flush your radiator once every year or two. Once a year seems a bit much but every other year sounds good. The coolant is will last up to 5 years, but I think you want to flush it out every now and then or you will end up paying down the line with a rusted radiator. It's not that expensive either, all the fluids were about $20... I bought a premixed gallon yesterday though for $10 so that was kind of unnecessary but I have some extra now. I recommend getting the kind you mix yourself and buying distilled water. It is about half the price of the premixed jugs.

Haha... I got the new coolant tank today and installation was actually painless. Drained the coolant, disconnected the tank's hoses, unbolted it and put the new one in its place. Filled it back up with some flush solution and going to do the deep flush in case the previous owner hadn't kept up with the coolant maintenance which is easy to forget. Car seems to be running a lot smoother and cooler and back to its old self again! (Just waiting on a new booster hose and it'll be all back to normal again)... Noticed the car had a few drips of oil underneath the engine. I was not aware of it leaking oil, but with the plastic cover off under the bumper, I could see some drips collecting.
PS The new coolant tank has metal reinforced hose nipples, so it looks like they improved the design of the oem tank. Also the new cap is much easier to remove.

I found a good new one on ebay for $50 shipped (for the x-type). I think it's actually better than oem too. It had metal reinforced nipples and the cap wasn't hard to remove like the stock one. The thing that sucked was waiting a week for shipping because my car was basically undrivable, although I did manage to rig up a plug and got it drivable again, but I broke the brake booster vaccum hose in the process... another $50 repair and week shipping, but it's all good now. Engine has been throwing CEL codes lately though. I think it has to do with a bad coolant mix when I refilled it and added some stop-leak pellets. Not good idea in retrospect. Also I think my coolant had more water than coolant. That can trigger the code they said too. Flushed the coolant out yesterday, so hoping the CEL won't return, or it might be the thermostat. Well anyway good luck.
