RE: cross referencing parts
Actually here in the USA cross referencing parts from ford could save you more than just a couple pence....
The jag specific oil filter is 11.00, the ford one can be had for 2 and change. And this is for something as simple as an oil filter, which is a very low cost maintenance part.
I for one would like to explore the issue some more...

Well, if you save a few bucks for the same part, why not? After all, they are both going to say Ford on the part.

One example of this wasan l filter when I had my Toyota MR2 Turbo. The Toyota one was slightly more than another which looked similar but the genuine Toyota one had a one way valve to aid oil distribution on start up.Personally I wouldnt take the risk unless you know for sure that the parts are IDENTICAL.
Re $2 compared to $11 thats about £5...worth it for peace of mind.

What you guys are talking about is the OEM trying to retain their parts business basically, we have the same scenarios in my line of work too.
Essentially, the OEM's slightly modify their parts or supersede them with a mod here n there, that keeps the pirates out and helps them to retain their share of what is a very lucrative market for them.
I'm pretty sure that parts and services is where a lot of the big OEM's make their money in the long run

Also, you must supply a VIN number for warranty issues. If you show up at the Ford house with a Jaguar VIN the parts guys will not honor the warranty. You will be guilty of mis-application for the part.
They are just protecting themselves. Wolves, like Motorcars, are always at the door. We go to the OE suppliers and buy direct when possible or manufacture parts on our own. It's how Jaguar stays one step ahead of us. They run, we chase.

Just to add a little more. One reason I like this site is because it primarily deals with S-type and X-type cars. I know the big sedans and other marks pretty well because they are out of warranty, so the dealers don't see them as often. As these cars come out of warranty and the customers begin seeking less expensive parts and service, that's where we come in. The dealers don't want to mess with the older cars. Most of there work is on new stuff. As the cars age, Jaguar allows us to buy more parts at better prices. It takes the heat off the dealers to keep moving forward. It's an ugly, incestuous relationship, but it works well for dealers, suppliers like us, and consumers.

not specifically parts related but when I had my 1st service the dealer charged me about 80GBP for the oil. Did not fall for that one again, as I work for Ford and therefore bought Ford oil to the correct spec with my discount for around a tenner. Oh and when the wiper blades needed replacing I fittted Mondeo ones.
