Default Cruise control unavailable Xtype 2.1 2003

My car has suddenly malfunctioned. It starts, shifts into gear and displays Message 'CRUISE CONTROL UNAVAILABLE'
If I press the accelerator the engine bubbles or jerks - does not run smoothly
I can hear water bubbling or running behind the dash (no leaks apparent) just seems like the coolant is moving around,
On the speedo dash, a single Yellow light is on
Prior to this happening I had noticed the car was a little smelly when I turned off and got out.

ANYONE ASSIST - I AM SURE THERE MUST BE SOME HISTORY ON THIS FAULT SOMEWHERE

I have just read plenty of history from the forum on my problem- this gives me plenty to go on - great site this with a nice bunch of helpful guys.
What I did not also mention (forgot) as I had noticed a couple of damp spots under the engine recently and put it down to condensation as
the colder weather is now about. This could be a split hose, which is one of the common faults the forum is advising to check.

I think you have 2 separate issues. First, the warning light about cruise not being available: This is a typical symptom of a split hose, but the hose is not a coolant hose. It is the hose visible on top of the engine which runs from the front back to the top of the manifold. If this hose is smooth in the outside, then this is almost certainly the problem. The smooth hose tended to split, usually underneath. Jaguar redesigned this hose with a strong ribbed pattern on the surface. You can replace this hose yourself in 5 minutes.
The coolant leaks are something different. They can be from the water pump, or a coolant hose, or, very commonly from the coolant reservoir (the translucent tank) - this can develop cracks at the outlet hose, or cracks on the bottom surface of the tank itself. Has the coolant level changed?

Sov211 - thanks for your reply.
When I first started the car - not issues - drove it into my repair area and it was back again - yellow light in speedo area
The water level has dropped about 2 inches.
I checked the PCV hose - smooth type - took it off and no signs of a leak. Although I must
say the pipe was just a push on and did not appear to be what I would call firmly fixed - was easy to pull off and
the rubber gaiters either were not completely pushed on = pipe part was labelled 2X4E-6K817-60
I lifted the bonnet and could hear an intermittent sound right under the expansion bottle
almost like gruff alarm coming every 20 seconds or so - like we used here in the old films when
the prisoners were escaping
Engine continued to pop and splutter
