Custom exhaust question

justin, it's just a 3 inch to where the pipe splits. i wanted to get the 3 inch the whole way back but the guy that i was talking to at my local exhaust shop (the owner) told me it'd be kind of tough to replicate that strange bend and that he'd just leave it 3 inch until there.
i don't think it would make too much of a difference to be honest but i can't be sure. also, i think if i did do 3 inch all the way to the mufflers, i'd have to get new mufflers that have 3 inch inlets. it was just more money than i wanted to spend at the time.

I was thinking about doing that too since I have some 3 inch pipe just sitting around but I decided I want to try a dual 2 inch pipe, have the split into two 2 inch pipes right where the flex pipe is and stay dual 2 inch all the way to the mufflers. I thought about going to 2 1/2 inch but the mina gallery mufflers I have are 2 inch inlets and I want to keep them.

I know they aren't cheap...but I cant recommend the Mina gallery mufflers enough. The sound is perfect for a Jag, and they are actually a straight-through design, just with a larger muffler housing so it helps do away with the typical high pitched sounds of a straight-through muffler. They also fill in the space for the stock mufflers perfectly because, they are designed to. They can also be installed in your driveway. MagnaFlows are probably the best "custom" inexpensive application though.

The JAG should have a low grumble, which you will get at low cost with Magnaflows, or, higher cost and more classy, with the Mina setup like Justink has. That said, you mentioned having low funds for this mod. so I will include the Magna Flow link for the ones I have.
Also, right after you have them installed, you will no doubt want to listen to them and have the muffler guy rev your engine while you stand behind the rear bumper and listen to the new sound. This will sound great, and it will mature with driving. Carbon products in the exhaust settle and fill in the small creases inside the mufflers and make for a deeper sound after some miles.

Changing your mufflers are definitely one of the best things you can do to this car. I've changed mine from stock to Mina Gallery oval tips and they sound incredibly deep, but not so much that it intrudes so much into the cabin.

That's what I did. I popped on a couple of Magna Flows and put an extra air pick-up onto the stock air box intake. More air in - More air out.
Everyone has a K&N air filter nowadays. This engine loves as much air as it can get. However, I will leave my resonator in place for exhaust, frequency-signal, phase matching. I imagine Jag engineers used an expensive software program to model the exhaust pattern of the X and then determine the placement of this resonator. Or, maybe they just got drunk again, like when they said the gear boxes shall be sealed for life.

Sorry, never thought of memorializng the exhaust note. The problem with messing with V6's is that their exhaust notes resonate at much higher frquencies than V8's. Cabin harmonics can be very annoying. You'll definitely have a bunch more noise by deleting center resonator and placing Magnaflows at the stern. You'll only notice a subtle more growl by deleting the center resonator alone...how about just popping on Magnaflows. Start here...this should do the trick.

If I were to buy mufflers should I look for 2" inlet or 2.25"? I heard the pipes are 2" but I'm not sure if I should get a 2" inlet muffler or if it's better to step up to 2.25." I am also thinking of using my stock tips too so in that case would I need to stick to 2" outlet or would they also fit on 2.25"? Thanks

Ok I was thinking about it though and since there is that little bend before the pipe goes in the muffler that would have to be fabricated, what is the ideal inlet size of muffler to get? Probably something a little larger than 2" would be best, no? I'm thinking like 2.25 or 2.5" might be a better fit with that custom piece that would have to be placed right before the muffler. Then I'm trying to find a tip that would fit but it's all sort of guess work. I was kind of hoping to use my stock tips but I'm not sure they would fit a larger diameter outlet.

why bother with having to custom make an adaptor to go from 2 inch to 2 1/4 inch when you can just get the right size. You have to have an exhaust shop weld on the tips and hangers anyway so they would also just weld the new mufflers onto the stock pipe. There is no gain in using bigger inlet pipe on the muffler. It just makes more work for the muffler shop and that means more money for you to spend.

I know but he said he got the 2.5" magnaflow, so that's why I was wondering if it would be easier to connect the stock pipe to the 2.5" rather than the 2" inlet since it bends right before it goes into the muffler. It kind of determines what kind of tip I can use so I'm trying to figure out which muffler size I need to get. I suppose I could ask the muffler shop but I would have to wait til after the holiday. It's just complicated. It has been consuming my time for quite a while now browsing through every muffler and muffler tip on ebay and amazon. I am almost to the point where I just want to leave it stock! Ha!

A good muffler shop can install them ether way, but if you buy mufflers with inlets bigger than the pipe they are connecting to the shop will have to make an adaptor or modify the pipe somehow. This is why I waited until I had the funds for the mina gallery mufflers, they fit perfectly and the hardest part of the job is cutting the stock mufflers off and that's easy.

Another option is the Borla muffler. That is almost the same as the one from Mina. At the time I actually bought them from Mina about 5 years ago. Nice throaty adult sound, but not offensive. Took my mechanic about an hour to swap out. The tips are bigger than stock. I can't say that it did anything to increase performance, but for me the sound and look were well worth it.
