Default Cutting the AC Ducting behind Audio Receiver

Bought a DVD double din & doesn't quite fit in the dash. Right now sticking out. The installer said he can cut the ducting out but the flap control is in the way as well. If he cut it both I won't have heater on my legs during winter. So I'm debating to cut the ducting or buy a new DVD unit. Any suggestions...I like the unit to be flushed.

If you check around or do a search you will find that the best you can do is get it to about 1/4" from flush. I guess if you live someplace where you'll never need heat or AC you could start chopping it up but how important are a: you need it flush or b: your tunes.

AC is more important - but wanna see if anybody have done this successfully. I told the installer not to do it. Maybe find a smaller unit. Saw Dennis Black's post & thought a 7" depth unit will work. Unfortunately not on '02s. It is sticking out an inch & 1/2.

In the audio forum here there have been a few guys doing double din. I was actually going to as well, had everything all picked out then had a look behind my head unit and realized that I would have to be really specific about what I replaced it with.
My concerns are at night there is nothing I like less than having all the factory lights on the dash one colour and the stereo another, so I need something that is green lighted or I can switch to green. Then it would need to be slim enough to fit...

I've read a number of them, none have gotten it flush but most get it to 1/4" which is OK I think. You have to screw around with a surround and it looks good. I'm still undecided, I've got the premium system with the sub etc but the lack of bluetooth, no iPod integration and USB / Aux inputs. I'm still looking at the ACM but up here it's 600.00 installed. If it was 200-250 I'd get it and install it myself.

I'm with you, sidewalkman.
The biggest reason for me to change out is the bluetooth & GPS. They all work great in the unit I bought but just don't fit. The unit is 300 & install is 200. So I'm out 500 already. I'll hunt for a smaller unit & change it out myself next time.

Check the audio forum here and google your issue. I've read about a few guys here who have successfully done the mod on the venting. It's tedious and a bit of a brute but it can be done with no ill effects to the AC or heater, it just takes some time a careful hand with a dremel tool and some ABS plastic I think.

Have you got any examples of people going this route?? I can't find one and was thinking that I may do the same thing.

Dennis I've already read your fantastic thread problem is I already have my unit and it's to large to fit so cutting the ducting seems to be the only way to go unless I want it sticking out.

sorry to hear its to large ,i just dont want to see you cut up that ac duct and then regret it because the ac helps get the fog of your windows ...if you can live with out it go for it...im curiuos to what the dimensions of your deck is

mine was 6.9 inches (177 mm). It is now sticking out til I find a replacement, so I'm looking at the depth to be around 6" or less...I might end up with a single din with motorized 7".

Dennis, did you hook up your steering wheel control to the unit? I have two wires in the unit dedicated to steering wheel control but the installer said he can't figure it out or maybe he just want to sell me a module & his install. I didn't go with a module because I might swap out the unit anyways.

My unit is aprox 185mm deep.

I was thinking that if I cut the ducting and then cover the hole with fiberglass shaped to allow the unit to be installed, providing I get an air tight seal around the edges then th AC should still work fine with maybe a little loss of power, hence the reason I would like to see where other people have gone this route.

If it's just space behind then I'll be fine what I'm afraid of is cutting away to find flaps etc behind the plastic.

We opened it up & there is flap in there. That is why I was hesitant to cut it.
