Cylinder Head Temp Sensor Out Of Self Test Range - Resolved
Hello
I have seen some information on this issue in the forms but nothing definitive..
I have a 2005 diesel 2 ltr x-type.
Recently its been losing power and going into limp mode
the engine light comes on and when I turn the engine off the fans keep going.
If I turn the engine off and on again , the fans stop and the car comes
out of limp mode. but it not long (about 3km )before the fans and limp start again
this is happen all the time now ..
From the forms I read to clen the EGR valve and change the Thermostat
I have done this ..
a friend hooked the car up to his lap top and got the fault code P1288
Cylinder Head Temp Sensor Out Of Self Test Range
I am going to change the senor.
Do I need a special rachet head to do this or can I get spanner
into where this is located ??
And, when using the diagnosis test on the dashboard
(using Trip and key in position II)
I don't see the error code P 1288 ? how do I see the code using TRIP?
if anyone has a screen shot of the location of the Sensor that would be
cool also
cheers

Tom, if the sensor has wires coming out the top, then you will need to get what is called an "O2 sensor socket" of the correct size. That will have a hole cut in the side that will allow the plug to hang out the side. Otherwise, get yourself a good deep well socket and all should be good. We don't have the diesel variant here in the US, so, I can't help you much beyond that. I would also give the wiring a once over for any signs of damage. From the sounds of things, in your case, your problem would stem from either a dirty connection at the plug to the sensor or a break in the wiring leading to the sensor.
As for reading the code from the dash, it is possible. The problem is that you have to convert what the dash says (which is written in hexadecimal), back to base 10/english. So, it is not a straight forward read. Not to mention that it won't give you the first letter, but will give you a number that you have to relate to a letter (seems to me that "1" is for "P"), then the other for numbers will give you the rest of the OBD code.

Hey Chris
Thank you for the info, sorry for the delay relying
I was able to source the Sensor from the Jaguar Deal for 30 euro ,,
which is not much,
As I changed the Thernmostat, and clean the EGR valuve myself I am going
to stick the Sensor in too,, (its all about lerning )
I will be doing it tomorrow , I will let you know after the weekend if it works
Cheers again

I've got the same code just come up on my 2.2d and I picked up a new cylinder head sensor today. I've just had a quick look and found where I believe the sensor to be, looking at the engine bay on the right hand side, above and to the front of the thermostat housing is under the pulley cover...or at least that's where the wire goes to.
I want to have a go at fitting it myself too, but am not sure how exactly yet. Im following your post with interest
Cheers

Fixed the issue
Replacing the Sensor has worked.
The problems where getting an 02 socket set.
I ended up getting a cheap Deep socket (size 15mm)
and taking an angle grinder to it. (to cut the gap in the side)
On the diesel 2.0 (2005) the sensor sits in behind a wheel.
(I don;t know the technical name) It can be tricky to turn the
sensor with the electric cable coming out of the top. so a little patience
I have tried to attach two pics . of where the Sensor is
and the socket, ( after the grinder got to it)
the needle file in the pic was to take the sharp edge off the socket
Hope this helps

The arrows in the pic are just the air pipe and
plug for the sensor
I filled the Air intale pipe with a plastic bag to stop dirt getting into it btw
Hope this helps
