Default In-Dash Radar/Laser Detectors

Hey Folks,

So I was at the Jag dealer today to get my oil changed... I was sitting around in the waiting-area and picked-up pamphlets for "K40 Undetectable Remote with Laser Diffuser."

So this product is supposedly very good at detecting police radar signatures, as well as detect and interfere with the operation of police laser guns. It's supposed to be professionally installed and is "undetectable" for the most part.

Have any of you had experience with this type of in-dash installed radar/laser detector? Does this product (or these types, in general) actually work well? Or is it just hype? And if it works, how much does this sortof thing go for? Their website conveniently doens't mention prices anywhere.

And for this week's trivia question....
TRUE OR FALSE? Last weekend, Happilute drove from Lowell, MA to Wayne, NJ in 2hrs and 40minutes.[sm=badbadbad.gif]

check with local laws about radar detectors and laser bouncers. some states, like PA, make having a radar detector illegal. the system you are talking about basically installs the radar sensor behind the grille and the laser bouncer goes around the front lic plate. lasers need a solid flat metal surface to bounce off of and this puts some sort of field around the front plate where most cops aim for. as far as quality, i would suggest that you research online the brand and find some reviews. back when these first came out most companies had an offer of reimbursing you if you got a ticket with their system.

personally i just buy the latest and greatest radar dector everytime i buy a new car and have it hardwired into the ignition. doesn't take up a cig lighter, never have to worry about turning it on andeverytime i have sold a car with one the new buyer was very happy to see it permanently installed.

nineball, i was thinking about gettig a radar detector, and want to hard wire it, where did you connect the wires on the X, i know a friend of mine did it on his car next to the driver visor, but didnt reallykn ow where he connected the wires to get power. i was thinking from the light in the visor but im not sure if ths would be a sufficient power supply. im thinking of getting the V1 radar detector, ive heard good things about it online and from friends that have one. i like the fact that it tells you the directin the signals coming from.

I drive around 30k - 35k miles a year, and for the last 7 of them have had radar detectors. They are an absolute must for todays driver if you're doing any sort of mileage at all.
I'm running the Road Angel 7000 c/w sat nav although I have sta nav in the Audi anyways. I bought the unit before I bought the car. It was fitted previously to the Saab 93.
The good thing about NOT having it hardwired is that you can transfer it. If you take you're time you can still do a very neat install!
Obviously if there's a legality issue it makes sense to hardwire the unit and hide it from view as much as possible.
As for how much? Like everything else..........All depends on what quality you want and coverage / protection capabilities.
Over here a basic snooper will set you back around £100.......You want more you can get an above average unit for £300 - £400.
If you want the all singin all dancin unit with all the bells n whistles as well as a unit that reflects the laser signals themselves you could be in the range of £1000 or more hardwired in.
Having used them for so long I have found I come to rely on them quite heavily, but, also use my common sense and sixth sense as they are not infallible. They're a great guide.

Also just because you hard wire one into one car you can also get the same power cord with the same connector whatever the volt connector the radar detector has and hardwire it into all cars you own so you can still take it from car to car...in all of my reading of muscle mustang and fast fords I've heard good things about the system you speak of...the scrambler thing it has from what they described just bounced the laser the cops point at you and bounce the signals everywhere but back at them! Which is always good...I've never had luck with detectors before but thats my luck...I'd imagine the more you'd spend the better but I could never justify spending good money on one...

They've saved my *** more than once I can tell you.
The Road Angel 11 that I had also had laser detection.....scans for infra red scatter, but these laser rifles can hit you at approaching 2 miles now...Usually once your hit you've got literally a second or so to react.
The system I have now....the Road Angel 7000 c/w Sat Nav actually dowloads from the Internet and updates all the sites where these bad boys hang out. It warns you well in advance of the probable danger and then its up to you if you take the chance or not?
Gatsos......rear facing fixed cameras........warns you approx 1 mile in advance.
Do you guys have a points system over there like we have?
Over here you get points for speeding etc.....the average being 3 although for certain things you can get 4 or maybe 6. Once you reach 12 points you're out of licence and have to re sit your test.
The points count for 3 years and stay on your licence for 4 years. They count as far as insurance is concerned for 5 years
Look at it this way.....A good radar detector = maybe £400+
Say you earn £30k a year and need your licence......If you're lucky and get 3 points every time you get caught, that means you can only be caught 3 times and Wham......No more licence.
So basically, forget the £60 fine and 3 points......essentially every time you get caught its like losing £10k......cos if you lose your licence, you've just lost that £30k a year job.

I have a perfect resolution...do the posted speed and you don't have to worry about cops tagging you at 2 miles away! Seriously though if things were like you have it over there here I'd probably just slow down and do the posted speed...seems to be the logical and cost effective way to do things!
And our system here in Michigan is 12 points and loss of license...not for sure on how long but I know you don't just get to go retake your test thats for sure...look at it this way my sisters boyfriend lost his license for tickets speeding mostly and plpd insurance on a 99 or so ford escort zx2 with a 4 banger is $150/ month! I pay $210 or so for full coverage on my 01 escape my 02 x-type and renters insurance! Plus I have a 75mph in a 70mph zone on my dmv record...well actually its been 3 years so my rate should go down a little in september when my insurance renews...

I know you're right about keeping to the speed limits Aquill, but its just so hard.
I mean 70 mph is sooo slow for todays fast paced lifestyle[&:]
Mostly over here on th motorways ( highways) people will sit around 80 -90 mph with the odd blast at 100mph or so.
Think I need to move to Germany and the Autobahns

ure lucky, id be happy with 70 mph the max we have here is 65mph, and our roads are twice the size of ures. atleast with 70 you can go 94 and still not get a reckless driving ticket. it feels a little more closer to a 100 then 90mph lol.

Its definitely fun leaving everything for dead! Thats the rush on a crotch rocket not the fact that you may get into trouble...just that you blow by everyone...the most fun part was that even if you blast away from every stop light the worst you would get would be 30 mpg...not to mention the bikes love it! I know my bike purred like a kitten when I'd run 100+ all the way to work! By the time I'd get off I-75 in Clarkston Mi and the thing would seriously be so smooth the idle was soo perfect it was crazy...helped when you run a little of the 110 in her too! I used to make this trip to work in very short times.... http://www.google.com/maps?q=2105+Po...p&ct=title

Only took about 15 minutes doing 80 all the way to work....made it on the bike in a few seconds over 5 minutes before! One day I woke up at 6:50 and still punched in on my timecard at 6:59!

Oh yeah and when the speed limit is 70 here I generally run at 79....most cops won't touch you if your doing 79 with other cars in front and behind...generally though I like to be in front with followers they are generally the ones to get pulled over not the leader...as long as they are doing the same speed that is!

The fastest I ever got was like 115 in the mustang about.

I just get a radar detector and plug it in, they ain't illegal in my state. And that way when I park I hide it so cops don't feel an impuls to give me tickets. i used to forget to hide it, and I'd get all these stupid tickets like tinted windows and city sticker missin.
Don't really need a radar detector for the xj40, don't really speed to much with it
