dashboard warning lights
hello all,
I joined here to ask some expert advice on a 2004 x type that i have just done a complete engine (used engine so i thought it wise to change every sensor and bit of wiring from the existing) swap on.
i have never worked on an x type b4 as i changed careers from mechanic to carpenter about 15 years ago. now i am trying to reenter the world 15 years behind electronics technology. i was rather overwhelmed when i opened the hood and thought maybe i should feign death rather than take on this job. however, with a lot of patience and a WHOLE LOT of help from jfenlys fine step by step, i completed it today, turned the key, and bam!!! she fired like nothing had ever happened to her.
i was thrilled! however im am not aquainted with the dash warning system whatsoever and am wondering if the amber light next to the door open light is in fact the check engine light.
i was expecting a check engine light actually and expected it to say check engine! i have tried all forms of words to search the threads so as not be a redundant poster but have had no luck. there is also a strange grinding sort of sensation when i apply the brakes that smells like an abs issue to me. not sure. would appreciate any input.
it also says washer fluid is low (very least of my problems and which i filled well above the sensor i believe (was all i had in stock lol).just looking for advice from someone that know this car inside out, exactly what im looking at on the dash, and if the symptoms provide deeper clues than im aware of. other than this she purrs like a kitten and roars like a lion! i wasnt even expecting it to start let alone run like a jaguar.
thanks very much for any help you might be able to give me and happy holidays to all
Randy

Randy, welcome to the forums. As Jim mentioned, there are lots of informational things around here.
As for your problems. The "check Engine Light" is a little motor looking symbol inside the tach near the "7" location. Looking at the legend I have, I don't see an amber light that is near the door ajar light. If you can find it in the FAQ area, you want to download the "On The Road Sect 4" PDF file. That will tell you what all the dash lights mean and all the information that you are after.
As for your problems with the low washer fluid level and the ABS issue, I would check near the right front wheel for a plug that has been disconnected and not reconnected. that would more than likely explain both of those issues. Granted, with as much work as you have done, it can be a number of things.
