Default Did I make the right buy?

Just bought my first car, a 2002 Xtype 2.5L Sport. Picked it up at an auction for $3200 CAD, needs about $1000 of work including new front tires, some repainting, and other maintenance updates. has 98000km or 60k miles on it, no history of problems apparently. I've previously been driving family cars - 1997 Mercedes E300, various Volkswagens, and recently a ford.

I don't care about the resale value or any of that, but maybe I didn't research the X-type enough before buying. The reviews on consumerguide, edmunds, canadian driver gave it fairly average ratings which I was ok with. I'm really worried about all the transmission problems that people have been plagued with or the rest of the major issues. Things like trunk latches in these models or minor issues don't bother me, but I just don't want to be putting in a transmission soon at the cost of what I paid for the car.

I live in the Toronto area so it would be an all year car, sun and snow.

I chose this car over a Mazda3/Jetta.

Should I be worried?

For the price you should be fine provided that routine maint was done on the car just as with any used car. That said I've learned all to hard about awd and not replacing all 4 tires at the same time. I would also start reading up on changing the transfer case fluid, and then change it along with the mt fluid and rear dif fluid.

Golden rule , you get what you pay for . I mean you could be buying a late model X Type which seems more reliable that the earlier ones but this time you would have to pay more than that .
Anyway, I don't think you made a mistake by picking up an X Type whatever it is I would go for X Type too

This car is such a sexy, sexy beast. Oil pan is cracked, we're going to weld it together likely. Though I keep reading that getting to remove it is a huge pain.

Also need to replace front bumper cover and front passenger side fender. Can anyone recommend places to purchase them from? Was quoted for $300 for the fender and 400 for the bumper cover but I'm sure there are cheaper places to get it.

/in love with the Jag.

I've got an '02 sport. Got it with just over 45,000 miles back in late '07. I've put about 20,000 miles on it since then and I treat it REAL well. I used to have a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and that thing was absolutely bulletproof, but by bulletproof I mean one thing would go wrong, it didn't stop, another thing happened, it wouldn't stop... before i knew it half the thing was broken and it still ran strong as hell, but the maintenance was going to be too much to even laugh at. Got the X and have had a couple issues, mainly a very tempermental check engine light, but it's been a good car. I drive fast, but don't push the pedal hard, but trust me, I have the same fears about the trans. Just treat it well, find some good guys to work on it and you'll love it. I'm all about Jags now. My next car will definately be another Jag
