EGR P0401, P0403 and P0405
New jag x type to me which is a 2006 2.2d, I had the engine light come in with a P0401 code, I erased the code but comes back on every 100 miles or so. I bought a replacement egr valve and when I went to fit it I found that mine was blanked off with a 6mm hole drilled in. The egr is the electronic version. I went ahead and put the new EGR valve in and removed the blanking plate which resulted in a P0403 and a P0405 code. I have now put the blank back in as I don’t want to risk going into limp home mode. Any ideas on how I fix this or do I leave the blank in and keep resetting the code.

See post 4 about the "hole"

code p 0403 refers to EGR --circuit malfunction===causes --wiring---EGR solenoid --ECM
replacing the valve probably not the problem as there is a separate solenoid to work the valve and that is what is listed in the probable causes
then you have to consider the wiring and connections to the unit.

The EGR system is monitored for undesired EGR flow during idle. The EGR monitor looks at the DPF EGR signal at idle and compares it to the stored signal measured during key ON and engine OFF. The test fails when the signal at idle is greater than at key ON engine OFF by a calibrated amount.

P0402
Description of the defect
EGR Flow Excessive DetectedThe EGR system is monitored for undesired EGR flow during idle. The EGR monitor looks at the DPF EGR signal at idle and compares it to the stored signal measured during key ON and engine OFF. The test fails when the signal at idle is greater than at key ON engine OFF by a calibrated amount.
Possible causes
List of elements that might trigger the appearance of this code
- EGR valve stuck open
- Plugged EGR vacuum regulator solenoid vent
- Plugged EGR tube
- Slow responding D.P.F. EGR sensor
- Damaged DPF EGR sensor
- Improper vacuum hose connection
- Plugged vacuum hoses
- EGRVR circuit shorted to ground
- Damaged EGR vacuum regulator solenoid
- Damaged PCM

Thank you for the response, I will wade through the info. I know the wires to my egr were fraid by the lid so I think I will start there.
Update, new egr valve with a blanking plate gives me the P0403 and P0405 codes, the old egr with a blanking plate gives me P0401, what should I make of that?

Hi, I did, it turns out the new egr valve was faulty, I put the original back in and bought a blanking plate off eBay with a bigger 10mm hole and the problem went away. The slightly bigger hole tricked the sensor into seeing sufficient gas flow and so no engine management light.
