Unhappy Electrical Humming Noise

Hi all

My wife and I just bought a well used (200,000 km) but very attractively priced '04 Phoenix Red 3.0 SportWagon.

It had a bad case of road rash at the front but otherwise looked in good shape - the interior especially has worn well. When we took it for a pre-purchase inspection, it came back with a glowing report. That was good enough for us and over the last 6 weeks and several 1,000's of km's, it's been a great car - no problems - we love it. (And hopefully, with AWD and proper winter tyres fitted, my wife is less likely to do a 180 on the highway when it snows this year........)

I'm still getting to know the various noises, ticks and clicks with the car and one has me a little worried. When the ignition is off (key removed), there is an audible electrical buzzing noise that is coming from behind the dash - not so loud that you'd really notice but definitely there all the time if you listen for it. Question to anyone with an X-Type - is that normal? Do I need to worry? Other than that buzzing, all the electrics work flawlessly on the car.

Many thanks for your help!

Danny, first off, welcome to the forums. As for your noise, if you look to the right of the steering wheel, you will see a very small vent (about 1.5x1.5 cm). This is an intake for the auto temp sensor for the cab heating/cooling system. This has a small fan in it and what you are hearing is this fan running. Completely normal, nothing to worry about.

I'm sure if you put your ear near that vent, you will hear it really good.

Yep...that noise is normal and it turns on every time you open the door of the car. It will also shut off automatically after a certain period of time after you close the doors.

Aha! My girlfriend and I always wondered what that was.

Yep - spot on with those descriptions - thanks, it's put my mind at rest.

And thanks for the welcome to the forum Thermo!! It's a great site - I've already found lots of posts that have been dead useful.

Methinks you just might have way too much time on your hands!
