4x4x4, the CEL light will go off by itself if the problem condition has cleared itself and the car has been able to go through 5 start cycles and was run long enough for the computer to complete a drive cycle with each start. Then, on the 6th start, it will clear the light. So, it kinda sounds like your car hick-uped and it was enough to throw a code and now it is gone. If you are wanting to know what is going on, the code is still inside the computer. So, you can still pull the code up and see what the car was having a hissy fit over.

If you go to many auto parts stores such as Advance Auto they will read it for you.

4x4x4, if you have a reader, then all you do is with the car parked, plug in the reader (port is under the dash near the steering column, on a LHD car, it is between the steering column and the outside edge of the car, tucked just behind the bottom edge of the dash). From there, you turn the ignition key to the RUN (II) position and worst case, you will have to hit "READ" on the reader.
Yes, you can use the instrument cluster to get the codes, but it will give you a 4 character code in hexidecimal and then you have to convert that number into decimal to get the code and unless you are good with match, just plug in the code reader you have.
But, like was said, if you stop by your local auto parts place, they should plug in a reader for you and give you the codes for free. Let us know what you get and we can help you out a lot more at that point.
