Default Engine light keeps coming on

I have a 2003 x-type. Recently I saw the engine light came on...had it checked out...It showed 3 codes...
1. P0305....cylinder 5 misfire
2. P1316...misfire rate exceeding emission
3. P1000...ODB system test not completed

I had the cylinder 5 coil replaced but the engine light would go away for a few days then return...abd the same codes can be seen....any help?

2003, you can ignore the P1000 code. That is a generic code that essentially means, I am not running right and I have not completed a good self check. As for the other two, they are telling you about the same information.

Unfortunately, cylinder 5 is located on the back side of the engine, driver's side. So, to access it, you will need to pull the top of the intake off. Not a hard job, but plan on taking about an hour to pull it off and another hour to put it back on.

In your case, what I would tell you to do is to pick up a new spark plug (basic double platinum plug, do not go fancy here) and then replace the spark plug and swap the #2 and 5 COPs. The #2 COP is the front passenger side COP and you should be able to access it by simply going to the left of the air box. While you are in that area, do a once over of the wiring just to make sure that there is nothing wrong with the wiring. If you can see copper, PROBLEM!!!!!.

Now, drive the car a little more. If the problem goes away completely, then you had a bad plug. If the problem moves to Cylinder #2, then you have a bad COP, replace the #2 COP (the really easy one to get to). If the problem remains with cylinder #5, then you have either a bad fuel injector or there is a wiring issue with #5 COP. Since you mention that the #5 COP has recently been changed, the odds of having 2 COPs bad is unlikely. But, it would not be the first time I heard of it happening either.

Hope this helps you get going on the road again without any issues.
