Engine malfunction light

Welcome to the forums!
The check engine light comes on when the car's computer detects something wrong with the engine. What you have to do is either visit an autoparts store and have them use a scan tool or purchase one yourself. I highly recommend purchasing one because it will save you a ton of money in the future diagnosing your cat.
Just a FYI: I purchased this one not to long ago.
If you look benith the steering wheel on the left side you will see a port, you just plug in the scanner and it will scan your car and let you know the error codes that the engine's computer is reporting. Normally the codes are in the this format: Pxxxx where xxxx is a numeric value (eg P1646).
Give that a try and let us know the associated error codes so we can pinpoint what the problem is. Also using a scanner tool you can 'erase' the code that's the system is reporting which will temporarily turn off the check engine light. after 5-10 minutes your car will most likely do a full check and the light coming back on.
Good luck!
