Engine Noise?

Engine Noise?
My car (2003 X-type 2.5 auto) seems to be making a strange rubbing noise after it's been driven for a while. it sounds like its coming from the driver side of the engine compartment and speeds up with the rpms, it is driving me insane. You can especially hear it while driving beside a wall or building. I've brought the car to my mechanic but it never seems to make the noise there (obviously lol). recently changed the idler pulley to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, this is probably a shot in the dark, but I was having a very weird engine noise that would amplify when I turned off my car. It sounded like a pulley to me, but upon further investigation, I discovered that it was a/c clutch that wasn't on tight enough (10 ft/lbs.) Unfortunately, I caught this as being the culprit of my noise after it blew up my compressor....

I'm pretty sure this sounds is coming from the bell housing. If it's just the torque converter is happily replace it. It even goes away once the trans shifts into 6th, which is also when a modern torque concerter's clutch would kick in.
So far I've had the jag people come up with $8k worth of other crap they'd be willing to fix, but not bother to diagnose this problem, and a mechanic act like he couldn't even hear it.

The garage start up was a cold start. It only sounds like that when the car has been driven for at least 5 minutes. Also it only makes that noise when the car is in gear and for about 10 seconds after it's put into park or neutral. I took the car to my mechanic and we put the car up on a hoist to see what it could be. He told me that it sounded like it was coming from the flex plate. He told me 12-15 hours labor because they have to drop the engine to get to it (between the engine and transmission)

Thanks for the information. I've been stressing about this for a couple months, worried my trans could fail at any point. The flex plate would be "better" news, but my noise is always there except when I;m in 6th gear. I understand a torque converter turns differently in max gear than under acceleration, though.
