Engine noise, what is causing it
Hi, I recently bought a used Jaguar xtype 04 and had some work done to try and get rid of the weird engine noise but I still have a lot when I put the car in drive and reverse and when I press on the accelerator. I recorded the noise, can anyone tell me what could be the problem?

Hi Henry,
Can you share the audio recording, otherwise it is like giving a blind person a normal book to read but saying you have the braille version somewhere.
If it is a tin rattling sound, sometimes the heat shields on the exhausts can rattle if a bolt has failed or the shield has developed a stress fracture around a fixing point.
Other than that, we will need more info........otherwise we are back to Dell getting his magic 8 ball fixed.
My crystal ball is also away for polishing too.....

Listened to the audio file, it is a bit ambiguous .......can you confirm...
Noise is not there when car is in park or neutral - when engine is just idling?
Noise is not there when car is in park or neutral - with engine revs lifted?
Noise only appears as you engage transmission in either drive or reverse - but are not moving?
Noise only appears once you engage transmission in either drive or reverse - and start moving?
Any difference in sound type or level if engine is cold, versus being up to normal operating temp?
Any difference if A/C on or off?

Noise when
So it seems to be quiet when in neutral and park but makes noise when I rev the engine. It also makes noise when I put into Drive or reverse and noise is louder when I accelerate.
I think it has got worse since the cold weather has come in and seems to get a lot quieter if I drive it for awhile.
on the A/C not sure, I can try it tomorrow to see if that makes a difference

henry, if you have the 2.5L or 3.0L engine, then I would almost guarantee that your noise is the heat shield between the engine and the firewall. If you open the hood/bonnet and walk to the right and stick your hand down in the hole there, you can touch the heat shield. I would say to confirm this, put on a heavy glove and have a second person rev the engine as you hold the heat shield. You should hear the noise change as you put your hand on the heat shield and take it off.

My 2002 3.0 has the same sound. Mechanic can’t find it (???). Only in drive, constantly. It sounds as if something is rubbing metal on metal. If I put it in neutral while rolling in goes away as I coast, back to drive comes back in about a minute. It speeds up and down with engine rpm, but not speed

RBaczek, that is the heat shield giving you grief. If you can find some chimney insulation or something else of the sort, you could pack a litlte bit between the heat shield and the exhaust pipe. The insulation will handle the heat. That should cause the noise to change at a miminum for you to confirm that it is the source of your noise.

When changing the plugs I found my rear heat shield was loose, it had broken around the mounting bolts and was just wedged there. I got some steel wire and looped it around one of the bolts on the rear cam cover and threaded it across the backside of the shield then twisted it around another bolt at the other end of the cam cover, been fine for over a year now.
