Default RE: Engine Oil drain plug location??

Be happy to help...The drain plug is on the bottom rear end of the oil pan..

If you have what looks like a black plastic scoop covering the rear part of the pan..that will have to be removed (held on by one 10MM bolt) to get to the drain plug (13MM)..The oil filter is a little hidden too by the front lower engine panel..but you should be able to get to it without removing anything..a band or strap filter wrench, would be handy to loosen it...Be sure to pre-fill the new oil filter before you install it...Total amount of oil needed is about 6.5 quarts.

I also take a chunk of cardboard from the new filter box and set it on top of the downpipe to direct the old oil into the drain pan, rather than let it leak all over the exhaust.

Nice pointers. How critical is it to use Castrol oil? I understand why you wouldn't deviate from the manufacturer recommended fluids for the transfer case and differentials, but engine oil is engine oil, isn't it? As long as you use an API certified multigrade oil, shouldn't any oil brandsuffice?

Yes...It's critical to use Castrol?
Yes...engine oil is engine oil?
Yes...any API certified multigrade oil brand should suffice?

Completely different takeaways depending on what "Yes" means.

Sorry, I was yessing this statement:
As long as you use an API certified multigrade oil, shouldn't any oil brandsuffice?
adding to that; as long as it meet JAG specs on this engine, you're good to go..But to meet and exceed those specs..I use Castrol Syntec..

I agree with Bo, 6,200 miles/oil change with synthetic is a good standard.

Damn Bo, you put on 25,000 miles a year?

Proof lies more in the long term results for me. I think that the secret to long engine life is more to do with how you treat it than what oil brand you use.
Over-changing the oil is wasteful and pollutes unnecessarily.
I prefer synthetic, ( I buy what is on sale ) and I go 10k km between changes. This is about 4 per year for me.

Most importanly of all things is to NEVER let the engine run with the level low.. check it regularily until you know your car's behaviour, then keep checking before long trips. This is the single most important thing for the life of your car.

Also of importance for long life is 30 seconds only for warm up, no idling for more than a minute (as is the law here anyway) and drive away gently until the engine has warmed up. Dont rev to redline until the oil is warmed up, and try not to park after agressive driving - (dont drive agressively when you are near to your destination)

All common sense, and all much more significant for your engine than chosing the brand of oil.

I am quite sure that since I change brands often, I get the additives that are needed.... one way or another!

210 000 km and still no oil needed between changes.... so I rest my case.
Great input, Bo. Can you clarify why the "importance for long life is 30 seconds only for warm up, no idling for more than a minute". That's the manufacturer recommendationon my other caras well, but Inever understood what the underlying issue was. Why is idling for more than a minute so bad?
