Engine Oil drain plug location??
I have searched the forums and have not found any information related to the location of the drain plug for a 2002 X-type (2.5). If anyone could provide me with this information and any hints related to changing the engine oil myself, I would appreciate it. The local dealership wants $75-80 for this....and one of the oil change shops does not want to work on the car. I have the JTIS manual on CD, but was unable to locate any information related to my question. It is also my understanding that there is a vent cover for the drain plug....if someone could confirm this, it would be helpful as well. Thank you in advance for any information.

RE: Engine Oil drain plug location??
Be happy to help...The drain plug is on the bottom rear end of the oil pan..
If you have what looks like a black plastic scoop covering the rear part of the pan..that will have to be removed (held on by one 10MM bolt) to get to the drain plug (13MM)..The oil filter is a little hidden too by the front lower engine panel..but you should be able to get to it without removing anything..a band or strap filter wrench, would be handy to loosen it...Be sure to pre-fill the new oil filter before you install it...Total amount of oil needed is about 6.5 quarts.

Nice pointers. How critical is it to use Castrol oil? I understand why you wouldn't deviate from the manufacturer recommended fluids for the transfer case and differentials, but engine oil is engine oil, isn't it? As long as you use an API certified multigrade oil, shouldn't any oil brandsuffice?

Yes...It's critical to use Castrol?
Yes...engine oil is engine oil?
Yes...any API certified multigrade oil brand should suffice?
Completely different takeaways depending on what "Yes" means.

RE: Engine Oil drain plug location??
Proof lies more in the long term results for me. I think that the secret to long engine life is more to do with how you treat it than what oil brand you use.
Over-changing the oil is wasteful and pollutes unnecessarily.
I prefer synthetic, ( I buy what is on sale ) and I go 10k km between changes. This is about 4 per year for me.
Most importanly of all things is to NEVER let the engine run with the level low.. check it regularily until you know your car's behaviour, then keep checking before long trips. This is the single most important thing for the life of your car.
Also of importance for long life is 30 seconds only for warm up, no idling for more than a minute (as is the law here anyway) and drive away gently until the engine has warmed up. Dont rev to redline until the oil is warmed up, and try not to park after agressive driving - (dont drive agressively when you are near to your destination)
All common sense, and all much more significant for your engine than chosing the brand of oil.
I am quite sure that since I change brands often, I get the additives that are needed.... one way or another!
210 000 km and still no oil needed between changes.... so I rest my case.

RE: Engine Oil drain plug location??
low oil pressure... low coolant flow, low air flow, poor alternator performance.
30 secs should be enough time to get the engine running and past the big rich mixture when first started. Drive way slowly until warm.
during warm up it takes longer to build hearwhen idling and that means running longer when cold.
the fuel air mixture is not optimised until the engine is warm so pollutants are up and so are contaminants in the engine, and the oil spark plugs get dirtier, carbon builds up.
running the engine at operating speed is the best for it.
