engine running lean and throwing codes?
hey all, having some problems with my mom's 2002 x-type 2.5 auto
the car is throwing 2 codes:
P0171
P0174
i looked them up and they're for lean conditions on both banks.
i originally thought it might be a defective MAF, but in my experience when those are going the pcm compensates by dumping extra fuel, not taking it away.
it gets a bit wierder too, the codes are always there, if you clear them they're back in minutes even at idle, BUT the actual check engine light only comes on when it's REALLY cold, likecolder than -10 degrees celcius (about 14F) and will clear itself (the light not the code) when it warms up.
any ideas?
thanks

RE: engine running lean and throwing codes?
any odd idling issues i.e. rough? What's it holding at at idle?
From my experiences w/the 2.5L, the IAC gets a bunch of soot very often. There's also a high pich sound emitted from the IAC in colder climates that leads to a rough idle. If postponed, it will throw a check engine light.

The fix for both them codes P0171 and P0174,is to Replace the Upper and Lower Intake Air Control Valve, O-rings and gaskets...

Just had the exact same problem a couple weeks ago, i replaced the Intake Air Tuning Valve O-rings, two of them and the problem went away. No more check engine light and the car runs great. Real cheap and easy to do. Parts are like $20 and labor takes like 5 minutes.

Hey forge look also at the tube that runs front to back and is under the plastic cover. If the tube there is cracked try replacing that tube and see what happens. Fortunately for me that fixed my problem when my car threw those codes. If fixed some other peoples codes and didn't fix others...its worth a $3 dollar tube though! Look at the pic...if nothing were saying here fixes it search all the links anyone gives on here...shaguar had the same problem but my fix didn't fix it! LINKY

RE: engine running lean and throwing codes?
I am resurrecting this old thread to see if anyone knows where to get the O-Rings for the Air Control Valves? Did you just take the o-rings off and get something in the same size from a hardware store? I have not been able to find them online or at a parts store. I guess if I have to I can go to the dealer. Thanks
