Use 5w30 Castrol GTX Magnatec (its a fully synthetic)
I asked Jag HQ and they said its OK to use synthetic even though they said not to in the outdated handbook
Use a genuine filter as its got the one way valve to stop drainage so is full when starting engine

I use Castrol Edge 5W30... Don't know it's it's better or worse than Magnatec though... My Jag Dealer recommends SLX Professional by Castrol...

There's an old saying- believe nothing you hear and only half what you see. If all the 'experts' had half a clue what they're talking about they'd still be dangerous.

Default I use....

Castol Edge 5W-20 or Mobil1 5W-20, slight preference to Castrol. Use whatever you can get at a good price and change it every 7500 miles max. I do mine (and my TC Case) every 5000 miles. If I used conventional oil, I'd do teh changes every 3000.

Oil (even synthetic) is really cheap compared to engines. I routinely get over 300,000 miles on an engine with no problem other than leaks; no burning oil, no fouled plugs, always pass emissions.

in Toronto we have a huge selection of oil brands, all at very low prices.
Go to Canadian tire and get whatever synthetic is on sale. Put the appropriate weight depending on the season. For now, I would put 20-50 since summer is coming. 5-40 maybe is ok too. If you live in Toronto, you must know it gets hot here in the summer?????

why would you presume that they use 5-10?

They say to follow the owner's manual for the oil. but for my 20 years of driving the owners manual is always the same for all cars.... runny for winter, thicker for summer.

Taken from Steve Hannes (US) website:
"Engine Oil: JTIS Spec (US): Engine oil (US), SAE 5W-30 ILSAC GF3, API SJ 5W30 ONLY – As the hydraulically operated VVT is extremely sensitive to viscosity changes. 5W30 gives the best viscosity range results with VVT. Never use a higher W number than 5W in the Duratec with VVT. Wider viscosity ranges or weights over 30 can defeat the hydraulic oil pump under certain temperature conditions and cause it not to respond, even though the ECM sends the electronic signal to shift. Jag service intervals change oil and filter every 10K – My interval is every 5K. Brands: Castrol GTX 5W30 (Castrol is actually recommended by name and logo in the Jaguar factory specifications dated 07/2004); most other shelf oil brands. Some believe in synthetics. JTIS doesn’t really say yes or no. Probably OK to use, but don’t take that as my recommendation. Capacity: 2.5L and 3.0L. 7 US Qts."

In short as Buck said the Jaguar recommended grade is 5W30.

There are numerous technical errors on Steve Hannes website...
It has some good information mixed with bad information.

Like everything on the web, the truth is not related to the best presentation of opinion.

Very true, and very well said....Mostly he copies and pastes info from the JTIS or OWNER's Manual..and in both cases there is mistakes and wrong information as well... For example..In the JTIS..the inertia impact switch is illustrated somewhere else in the engine compartment or other than where it really is, it's in the right-side of passenger foot well. (NA models)

I've had 2 X Types, and, now, an S-Type 4.2. The oil fill caps on all 3 indicate that 5W-30 oil is to be used. I've used Castrol GTX 5W-30 oil in all 3 cars with no problems.

using 5w30. Check the filler cap as all jags have the spec stamped on it. Using synthetic in my x-type 3ltr, but have put in additional additive that's supposed to protect moving joints- rather like a thick grease. When you do an oil change, use a cleaner to remove all deposits from inside the engine. I use K&N filters throughout- reckon they offer longer life and greater performance.

Been running Mobil 1 5w-30 for most of the life of the car. Easier since I run the same brand/viscosity in my Saab turbo, so I can stock my inventory with the same kind and not worry about it.

Been running Royal Purple in my Jeep for about 3 years due to the heavy use - towing and off road abuse. Love the stuff but it's $8 a quart.

I ran Redline in my 1985 900 Turbo SPG and put 325,000 miles on it before the rust monsters took over the body.

This is one of those arguements/discussions where plenty of answers are the "right" answer. You have not received bad advice so far from what I've read. I think you could get away with 5w-20 without any adverse impact. When cold it runs like a 5wt, when hot a 20wt.

I have used Castrol in all my cars over the past 30+ years..Recently as 2002 I started using Castrol Syntec in a New Land Rover I had and My 03 JAG has been on a diet of Syntec (5w30) since it's 1st 1000 mile oil change..Last year I changed over to Castrol Edge....

I have never had even a single engine problem or oil leak in any of the cars I've owned while using Castrol..I'm sold on it for life.
