First trip and cruise not available
I took my new to me X on a 6 hours round trip today. She drove like a dream and I had no mechanical issues!!!! She averaged about 28-29 mpg. I am really enjoying this car more and more everyday.
The cruise not available warning came on about 1 hour into the trip. The cruise has not worked since I bought it but the warning drives me crazy. Anyone have any ideas on what I should check to get the warning off and the cruise to work?

Yes...look at the engine; do you see a hose on the top of the engine going from the manifold forward under the plastic engine cover (this cover is on the 2002 cars, deleted some time later...04?). If this hose is smooth rather than ribbed, it likely has a perforation on the underside and this is causing the problem. Jaguar redesigned this hose, now stronger and ribbed; you can replace it yourself in 5 minutes; it costs about $15 as I remember.

My car has the new hose. I stopped for fuel this morning and noticed the brake lights were staying on. The switch is firmly in the holder but I need to see if there is some type of adjustment or spring that might be worn. It seems to be very touchy and the lights will go out if I just the switch.

It sounds as though the brake light switch has bit the dust. The switch also controls the Cruise Control.
You probably need to change out the switch. There are some threads on the forum for changing the mico-switches in the housing assembly but I would opt for a new swtich and less fiddling around.
To ease the change out you may want to remove the drivers seat. I am a smaller size guy and changed mine with the seat retracted all the way rearward.
To shut off messages on the console you depress the center button on the trip meter console and it will cancel out messages.

Correct! Crucial information: the brake lights remain on! The cruise control will not function if the brake light switch is depressed (this is a matter of safety) or, in this case, if the switch is malfunctioning. So if the brake light issue is fixed the cruise issue will also be resolved. Proper diagnosis requires a full and correct history statement...

All the bulbs are good, it seems like it needs just an 1/8 of an inch adjustment to work correctly. I thought I saw something yesterday on being able to adjust the switch by pulling out the plunger. If that doesn't work I guess I will have to get a new switch.
My daughter's boyfriend is visiting before he goes off to basic training so I am getting extra help on yard work so I am trying to get ahead while I have the chance!!

I pulled the switch down and removed the wiring harness, took a pair of needle nose and pulled on the plunger on the switch, it came out a little ways with a ratcheting sound. Reinstalled the wiring harness and then put it back in the mount. Pushed the brakes a few times and IT WORKS!!!
I did not take it out to see if the cruise works but I am glad the brake lights work correctly again.

Saturday I changed the trans oil one more time and did a few odds and ends to the old girl. I then got a call that my 86 year old Grandma was not doing so well. I got up early Sunday and took the Jaguar on a 4 hour trip north to visit her before she passed yesterday evening. The car drove amazing and the cruise worked flawlessly. Glad the brake lights are working correctly again.
