Fix for engine rattle
2004 X type 2.5 ltr auto estate. Noticed a bad rattle coming from the engine, thought it may have been the power steering pump as it was worse when turning the steering wheel (car stationary). Very difficult to locate the noise but eliminated the power steering pump after a closer inspection. After reading several old posts in the forum, on engine rattles I decided to get under the car and check the bolts holding the engine to the transmission, I easily found and removed the small plastic inspection cover, turned the engine and located the 4 bolts, (the engine needs to be tuned by hand to check all four bolts). I discovered all the bolts were loose with one backed out at least a couple of turns. I tightened all the bolts and the noise is gone. I have reposted this as it is not easy to locate under the old thread entitled "steering pump noise" It is a very easy DIY fix and solves what initially sounded to me like an expensive repair. I took a couple of pictures showing the inspection cover in place, remove the bolt shown in the centre of the picture to remove the plastic cover. The other picture shows the cover removed, and one of the bolts (just above the threaded hole for the cover bolt) that was loose, rotating the engine will bring the other bolts into view.
Anyone know if Jaguar have issued a bulletin on this problem ?
Hope this may be af help to someone. Cheers, Endressen
