Fragile paintwork

Fragile paintwork
Hi,
I'm having a strange problem with my X-Types paintwork.
The paint appears to be scratching, chipping and in one case coming off, for no apparent reason.
On Saturday the wing was scratched when a piece of plastic sheeting from the side of a gazebo brushed against it.
The bonnet (hood) leading edge is seriously chipped.
The edges of the roof have been seriously scratched going through a car wash.
Its almost like there is no clear coat on the car.
The car is British Racing Green, paint code HHP.
Has anyone else had this probelm?
Thanks
Ewan

Your biggest problem is using a car wash. You will have nothing but swirls and scratches when you use those things.
First wash the car thoroughly. Then use a clay bar, this will take off all the contaminants left on the car from washing and will give you a good base to start from.
A good quality compound to remove the swirls and scratches.
Then a good quality polish to bring the paint up.
Finally, a couple coats of wax to give it a deep lasting gloss.
Give yourself the weekend to do it properly, take your time and keep it out of the sun when doing it.
For any more info, check out the detailing section on the forum. There are some great tips and videos to help you through it.
When you've done you will never use a car wash again.

Thanks jimbov, your probably right, the damage to the roofline was due to the carwash so I'm probably going to have to hand wash.
astromorg, a total lack of lacquer in the BRG paintjob would explain the damage but not how I could buy a 4 year old car with good condition paintwork and then have it go bad in 5 months.
There doesnt seem to be any signs of a respray.
