did you buy it from a dealer? does your state require you to display front plate? if yes to both questions then i think by law who you bought it from has to make it legal for the state your in. hope this helps. didn't realise that something i would take for granted could cost so much! Bill

Yes, the car was bought by my grandfather brand new from a dealer in IL. A front license plate is required in IL however at the time (2002) the dealer said that there was no bracket for the car and refused to mount it. He complained a bit but they wouldn't budge and the only option was to mount the plate directly to the bumper without a bracket. I am in the process of purchasing the car from my grandmother and got a ticket the other day while parked in the city. I would try to get them to give it to me for free but a lot of time has passed since the car was bought. It's probably not worth the fight just to save a few bucks.

i would call the dealer and remind them. be polite but persistant, also mention how all your freinds that own jags never have this kinda trouble in ohio... and that they BY LAW are required to have put this on the car upon delivery. you getting tickets and going through this kind of treatment is really silly. if the person you speak with at the dealer doesn't help, move up the food chain. also what's the grandparents driving now... maybe not a new jag if this is how they treat folks, good luck, Bill

Thanks for the suggestion, I might try that. My grandma doesn't drive and my grandfather passed away a couple of years ago so the car isn't driven much. I'm currently driving an 03 mustang GT which will be for sale at some point in the next week or so. The x type is slower but a lot nicer for any trips longer then 30 minutes.

sorry about your loss... had 00 stang, loved it, then had a little girl, sooooo. funny thing, when i bought my stang new, they asked if i wanted the front plate on or not. i opted out for esthetic reasons. man they must be real hard *sses where you live. i've been pulled over for the front plate before but never got ticketed. man that stinks, good luck, Bill

Thanks for the reply and condolences. The stang is a great car but after a few years it starts to wear on you as a daily driver. Believe it or not never had an problems before with the plate not being there in the past 5 years. That was out in the suburbs though, in the city of Chicago they love writing tickets for anything and everything.

I wanted to take my front plate off after my dad gave me the car. Take the plate off and realize...Damn dealer RIVETED the mounting bracket into the Car!! So its permanent unless I want to rip holes in my bumper taking it out.
Luckily the bimmer just has a drilled bracket so I can take that out.
